safari 3
Aug 1st, 2007, 10:29am

Just noticed a new version of safari 3 beta is out.
As I'm still on safari 2, a few questions :
Is 3 strong enough for regular use yet? (I have Camino, Firefox and Opera as well in case of trouble).
Can you install it alongside 2 or does it replace it?
If it replaces it, how do you get 2 back again?

I installed the first beta that came out, then uninstalled it not long after as it wasn't compatible with some of my other apps.
I reinstalled the updated version a few weeks ago and have just installed the latest update for it.
I like it now, I dont have any problems with it crashing anymore either.
I've stopped using firefox and have set safari to be my default browser and haven't had any probs so far.

As for uninstalling, safari just reverts to the previous version when safari 3 is uninstalled.

I've had no problems with Safari 3. I believe all the apps that didn't work with it have been updated by now.

You cannot run it alongside Safari 2 - it replaces Safari 2. You can uninstall it though and go back to Safari 2.

I DO have Safari 2 and 3 running side by side. When Safari 3 installs, it backs up Safari 2 somewhere (can't remember where) and all I did was retrieve it and rename it Safari 2, and also change the title of the app in the menubar when it's running to Safari 2, so I can distinguish between them both.
Both versions use the same preferences, so bookmarks etc are consistent across both browsers.

I'll see if I can find the article about it.

Seem to be having a little trouble with it, if I right click and I even tried Option click on a link, about 95% of the time Safari 3.0.3 will crash on me. Don't know if there's any causes or clashes somewhere as the previous version it wouldn't Quit on me and I was always forced to Force Quit  Undecided

Must be something that's specific to you. I don't have that problem, and it hasn't been reported anywhere else on the web.

This one? http://macenstein.com/default/archives/659

But does this really run Safari 2 or is it running Safari 2 on the new version of Webkit? That was my thought and seems to be the case:

"[UPDATE:] Some readers have pointed out that this workaround may not be much of a workaround at all. Apparently even if you backup your old Safari 2 installation, Mac OS X will use the new version of Webkit that ships with Safari 3, so essentially it looks like all this may do is let you run Safari 2’s interface on top of Safari 3’s core. Additional info would be appreciated.]"

No it wasn't that one. I think it was from macosxhints or something.

I can visit sites in Safari 2 that don't like Safari 3 - such as my bank. I don't know if it's the browser identifier or the webkit version it doesn't like. Huh
