program used to hide desktop and icons
Jan 18th, 2010, 10:18pm

I recently watched a SCO episode that mentioned a program that Don uses to hide his desktop and it's icons.  Now, I can't remember if this was a recent episode or one on my Archive DVD's that I've been going through.

Does anyone know which application this was?  It was suggested as a great program to use when doing screencasts.

Do you mean Desktop Curtain?

I think the ‘official’ site is down as of time of writing — http://www.manytricks.com/desktopcurtain/, but you can pick up a copy from http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17728.

I believe that is the one.  I figured that I would recognize the name when I heard it, but couldn't backtrack and figure out which episode I had heard it on.

Thanks.

Just now getting back to this.  Does anyone know if this still works smoothly in 10.6.2?  It doesn't look like it's been updated in almost 2 years.

I downloaded Desktop Curtain.  It has some odd application behaviors.  It doesn't show an icon in the dock and when I ran it the first time and set the preferences, it doesn't even seem to have a menu.  Click in the window to select the application and the menu bar still shows the Finder as being the active application.  The only way to get to and find the preferences window (since it doesn't show in the dock) was to activate Expose.

I got the application to cover the desktop ONE time (the first time launched), but it won't work again.  Double-clicking to launch does nothing except bring up the preferences window every other time.

What am I missing?  Or is it just now built to work with Snow Leopard.  It hasn't been updated in a while.  Is there another application that does something similar?

Since I couldn't get Desktop Curtain to work correctly, I downloaded "Camouflage" instead.  It works great.  Simply and easy.  Shows up as a menu bar item.  My menu bar is almost out of space on my 13" Macbook, but I still have space for a couple of more icons!  Smiley
