Quicken essentials or some other accounting app
Mar 10th, 2010, 11:11am

Doesn't have to be the new Quicken but would like a show going into detail of what is the best program for managing home accounts and budgets.

I trailed a load of these when I first switched to the Mac looking for something to replace MSMoney  and I have to say its a pretty poor showing on the Mac.   I tried everyone I could find and found most of them to be pretty bad.

I'll have to look at home and see which ones I left on my system as a reminder to look at later and see if they had improved in later versions.   Off the top of my head I think they were

Moneywell - http://nothirst.com/moneywell/
MoneyDance - http://moneydance.com/
Cha Cha Ching - http://www.midnightapps.com/   although the author seems to be dragging his feet with this one so not sure I would try it again.

Quicken I wasn't impressed with, and also they had decided they would only support the US version so no European versions were made.

If you do a search on the main forum I'm sure there are some old thread where we discussed these type of apps.

Cheers for that, I will check them out.

I switched to the Mac about a year ago now and this is the one area that I haven't found a good solution for.

I noticed that Quicken Essentials for Mac was release a couple of weeks ago but so far the reviews I've read haven't been that good.

I purchased "Quicken Essentials for Mac," and it's exactly what it's titled "Essentials." Intuit dropped the ball once again for mac users, but this time with the pricing. The app which is much better than before is starting all over from the ground up.

The app has potential and I believe with the guy from mint working on it will be great. The program should have been priced around $29.99 not $70.

Doing a screencast now would be a great idea because Intuit has no documentation on using it anywhere. If there were a step by step guide on how to use it, and how you are supposed to use it I believe people wouldn't be so frustrated with it right now.

You have to play with it and explore to find out how it works. This isn't a very good comfort zone with people when it comes to their own personal finances.

Heres your chance Don, Grab ahold of the whole quicken community and people frustrated with finance apps for mac and bring them here.

I don't think SCO should bother with Quicken as it's US and Canada only, so no support for the rest of the world! Also as Phil and Don mention, the Mac sucks for financial apps. I use iBank but it's not great and I was hoping Quicken would change their policy and start making an app for the worldwide market again. Then again, if it's as crappy as the reviews are saying, we don't appear to be missing anything of importance.

I have to disagree mabsey, as in Australia having GST (Goods and Services Tax) Quicken is right up to date with it.

But I can say that yes, it would be difficult for Don to benefit everyone with ScreenCasting Quicken, as Tax and pricing vary from State to State, Country to Country.

So all he could show is sample in UK Euro Dollars and Statements, but:::

that could also help others to get some understanding of the app, but they would need an understanding of their country's system and taxes. I think really Quicken should encourage each country to have plugins for their Tax payers and een as this original post is asking, for home budgeting.

So back to home budgeting it shouldn't be to hard for a demo video then, not so much into the business side as I was originally thinking.

Bunga, we can agree to disagree then. You can only download Quicken Essentials For Mac if in USA or Canada. I for one am not interested in paying to watch a screencast for an application I cannot even get. I'd rather a show on apps that aren't geographically restricted.

Yeah it sucks that Intuit made the decision to only have US/Canada involved for quicken essentials. Hopefully this is all part of them starting from the ground up with the mac community. The guy from mint did call them a bunch of dumb asses when he came in and took over.  Grin

This is why I said they messed up with the pricing. After all the lies, and false promises they made to the mac community they really should have given this first release away for free.

I think Intuit already has enough hate from the Mac Community that no matter what they do they may never be able to release a product good enough for us. This is supposed to be a start so hopefully it gets better.

I doubt it,  the decision to only support US/Canada happened years and that was also the PC Version.

I did use Quicken on the PC and found it wasn't getting updated. I then spotted that only the US version was,  so I ended up switching back to using MS Money.  I've had a Mac for 3 years now, so it was way before then.

Hmm, I was really referring to Quicken it self, not essentials, so I jumped the gun because I don't know anything about the essentials and if it USA/Canada restricted I see your point. As in Quicken on it's own does manage many formula's for tax expenses.

But I'll add that the otherday I launched Cha-Ching for the first time in the many years I've had since most likely the first Mac Heist. I discovered that, thinking all this time it was USA based for online banking, but putting in my log-in page to my bank it can access it and export the Quif file and keeps up to date. Not what I originally did was download the Quif file and export it from the Finder and have balances all screwed up. In the App itself it manages it quite well. Tagging stays pretty well together for continues transactions and things.

So maybe worth another look Phil Wink

Not a good idea. Cha-ching is vaporware...been in beta for over a year. From what i understand there is little to no communication from teh developer.

I picked up squirrelapp a while back which seems to have promise. The developer seems to be working on it all the time adding new faeatures, and recently added an iPhone app. Although there was no direct downloading transactions at the time I used it.

I've tried everything out there since I switched to mac 2 years ago. I used quicken for years on a pc and nothing out there comes close to it. I dunno why it's so hard for intuit to get their heads out of their asses and make a good financial app comparable to the windows version for mac.

Yeah, I've tried Cha-Ching and it isn't at all good. Perhaps when iBank moves to version 4, I'll give up on apps altogether and turn to using my own spreadsheets. However, I do like the convenience of the iPhone app for iBank that means I can enter transactions on the move and then it syncs those transactions via MobileMe.

I also got it via one of the Macheist bundles.  I'm sure what we actually bought was the version which has been stuck in perpetual beta.  So as mentioned I treat it as vaporware and wouldn't give it another try.
