++ Apps for Activity

Date: 16th June 2017

Duration: 43:11

Show ref: SCOM0639

Whether you're already athletic, or if you want to get into better shape with the help of the Apple Watch, these ++ apps from Cross Forward Consulting might enhance your activity tracking.

The Apple Watch comes with both standard Workout and Activity apps that can show metrics on the watch as well as on the iPhone. Unfortunately, you can't control what metrics you see on the Apple Watch whilst doing a workout. With Workouts++ you can create custom watch faces for each type of workout you do, allowing you to display different metrics and even graphs on the Apple Watch.

In this tutorial, Allison Sheridan demonstrates the configuration of Workouts++ using real workout data, as well as how to use the information collected from your workouts in Activity++ and Pedometer++.

Whether you're an athlete, or just want to get more active, these apps will help make your workouts more fun.

Tip - Apple Watch - Activity

Date: 23rd May 2017

One of the top reasons for using an Apple Watch is to motivate you to track your activity with the Activity app.

This tip video takes you through some hints and tips on optimising your usage of the Activity app. Including such things as:

  • Using Apple Watch faces with the Activity & Workout apps

  • Easy ways to start workouts

  • Bypassing the Stand Up reminders and still achieving your goals

  • Adding in missed workouts manually

Reminders is a surprisingly powerful application that comes with macOS, iOS and watchOS. With Reminders, you can bridge the gap between your calendar and a to do list. Reminders can be set for when you arrive or leave a location, they can be set for specific times and dates, they can repeat, and they can even be set to remind you to do something when you get into or out of your car.

Reminders even lets you share lists with other Apple users so you can collaborate on tasks. You can use Siri to set up Reminders on your Mac, but Siri on iOS and the Apple Watch, makes Reminders the best tool for when you're on the run.

Apple AirPods

Apple's new AirPods have been out for a month or two now and I've had time to have a good play with them.

In this slightly shorter, live video show, I take you through the initial setup and usage of the AirPods on all the supported Apple platforms - iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac. I also take a look at setting up the AirPods on a slightly older Apple device - an iPod touch.

I have to say, I've been delighted with the AirPods and Apple have added their secret source to make the setup and switching a breeze.

Spark is a beautiful and intelligent Email app with a huge following. It's been available for iPad and iPhone for quite a while and last month saw the release of a brand new version for the Mac.

More updates for macOS, iOS 10, watchOS 3 & tvOS.

Some minor changes to Mail on the Mac and iOS, some big changes to Maps on iOS and a first look at setting up Home Automation with HomeKit and the new Home App on iPad and iPhone.

Continuing with our look at Apples latest OS for the iPhone and iPad, I also take a look at some of the new features of the dramatically enhanced watchOS 3.

Apple have significantly improved the Apple Watch with the release of watchOS 3 by increasing performance and removing the friction points that were so evident in the first releases of watchOS. Performance is drastically improved and the usability of the Apple Watch has been transformed - so much so that unless you really need GPS or waterproofing, upgrading to a series 2 Apple Watch is optional.

In this episode I explore some of the changes made to enhance the functionality of the Apple Watch and demonstrate some of the new constructs for accessing and navigating Apple Watch apps.

With the recent release of both iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, this episode covers some of the new and updated features of both operating systems, as well as some handy tips on migrating your iPhone and Apple Watch to new devices.

With the Apple ecosystem being tightly integrated across all platforms, one update has an impact on all the others. Last month Apple released updates to OS X, iOS, watchOS and tvOS.

In this episode, I take a look at most of the major changes and enhancements across the board.

Continuing with our look at iOS 9, this week I cover the new multitasking feature Picture in Picture, the brand new News app and take a first look at watchOS 2.

Whilst the more complex task managers have their place, sometimes you just want to create a simple to-do list.

Clear is a simple application designed from the ground up for creating and checking off lists. Available for iPad, iPhone and the Mac, Clear is simple to use and gesture based. The iPhone App even has an Apple Watch app included.

One of the most surprisingly useful aspects of the Apple Watch is its focus on Activity and Health.

In this episode I take a look at the Activity Rings and the Workout App on the Apple Watch, along with a peek at the Activity App and the Health App on the iPhone.

The third tutorial taking a look at the new Apple Watch, in which I delve more deeply into some of the new features, namely Email, Photos and Music .

The Apple Watch is here! Well so says Apple's web site, but it's not here for everyone.

Regardless, I was able to order as soon as they were released and thankfully, I was one of the lucky ones to receive the Apple Watch on launch day. The least I could do was to create an Introduction to Apple Watch tutorial whilst I get to grips with the device.
