Two great apps this week - FotoMagico to take your slide shows to the next level, and Scanner Pro 7, the portable scanner in your pocket.

You may thing you’ve got slide shows covered with Apple Photos, but you really haven’t when you take a look at the functionality built into FotoMagico!

We had a brief look at Scanner Pro 7 in a previous show, but I was very impressed with its capabilities and wanted to drill down a bit more.

Time for an update show on two of my favourite apps - ScreenFlow and LiquidText.

Text expansion is one of the best ways to increase your productivity. Just type abbreviated keywords and have them expand into words, sentences, paragraphs or whole pages of text. Expand into images or formatted text, or use fill in snippets to prompt you to complete boilerplate text. These are just some of the options available using TextExpander and other text expansion utilities.

In this episode, we take a look at the newly released TextExpander 6 as well as some other alternative apps.

In this episode I cover the basics of Copy and Paste.

Starting with the basic built in keyboard commands, to an easy way to copy and paste using the Mouse or Trackpad with PopClip, finishing off with a look at one of the best clipboard managers I’ve seen for a long time - Copied.

Introducing 1Password for Families & Teams.

You may already be familiar with the 1Password app for the Mac and iOS and know that 1Password is a fantastic way of securing all your passwords, credit card information, account details and much much more.

With the standard 1Password app, it is possible to share your secure data with family members and colleagues, but you need to sync your data using third party services. It works, but it's not so easy to setup and maintain.

Enter 1Password for Families and 1Password for Teams - These new subscription services make it so much easier to share your secure information with trusted family members and colleagues. There's no need for third party syncing services, it's easy to setup plus you get control over who accesses what, as well as the ability to recover lost or forgotten passwords for members of your family or teams. Even better, there's full integration with your familiar 1Password applications, in fact, everyone gets the full versions of the apps on all platforms as part of your 1Password for Families or 1Password for Teams subscription.

Airtable is an amazing cloud based database app that runs in your browser as well as natively on your iPhone and iPad (with an Android app on the way). Being cloud based, it’s truly cross platform and updates are synchronised almost instantaneously across all platforms and devices.

Best of all, there is a generous free version, it’s really easy to use and it’s extremely powerful!

It takes a lot to impress me, but I’ve been blown away by Airtable!

Parallels Access for iOS

Date: 6th September 2014

Duration: 15:43

Show ref: SCOI0179

Parallels Access is a unique solution to the problems of remotely accessing your Mac from your iPad or iPhone.

There are plenty of remote access solutions out there (we've covered quite a few on ScreenCastsOnline) but there has never been a solution that solves the issue of trying to access a large, high resolution display from a device with a smaller screen. Most remote access apps will allow you to scale the desktop to full size, but then everything is too small to either see or control. Otherwise, you can zoom the screen up to full size on your iPad or iPhone, and then end up scrolling everywhere.

Parallels Access gets around both these problems by allowing your Mac apps to appear just like iPad or iPhone apps, each app taking up the full iPad or iPhone screen. You really need to see it in action to see how different (and how effective) this is, compared to other remote access applications.

AccessMenuBarApp - Is your laptop resolution causing menu bar icons to become hidden? AccessMenuBarApp allows you to show them all with a single keystroke or mouse gesture.

VideoGIF - Create animated GIFs for support or just for fun. VideoGIF allows you to capture or convert any video clip into an animated GIF and share via social networks, email or via websites. In this segment, I demonstrate using QuickTime X to do a video screencapture, convert to a GIF and incorporate into a Clarify document.

With iOS 7 now launched, thoughts turn to OSX Mavericks, due out in a month or two. The upgrade process for a Mac is very different than for an iOS device, with potentially a lot more data at stake.

So my recommendation would be to get a bootable backup strategy in place and start thinking about cleaning up your Mac.

So this show runs through two applications that will help you do just that - Carbon Copy Cloner & Clean My Mac 2

One of my most used applications this week - ChronoSync. ChronoSync is an application I use daily to backup and synchronise my data between my Macs, my Drobo and my Synology NAS server. Highly configurable and customisable, it's really simple to set up synchronisation documents to undertake a variety of tasks. Once created, simply use ChronoSyncs built in scheduler to automate the process.

I also take a look at ChronoAgent, optional software you can install on your Mac targets to give you even more control and flexibility.

Econ Technologies have just released a new app for the iPad - InterConneX - that allows you to utilise ChronoSync and ChronoAgent to sync or access files between your Mac and your iPad, or even iPad to iPad. One of the problems is knowing where to start and understanding how to access the different information sources. For my needs, I found that all this was resolved by using Ancestry.com (or in my case Ancestry.co.uk). This is a paid service (with a 14 day free trial) that pulls all the information sources together and gives you easy access. It also does a lot of the leg work for you by analysing your family tree and delivering your automated "hints" to speed up the searching process.
