Tip - Video Saving to iOS

Date: 23rd January 2018

Duration: 05:55

Show ref: SCOM0702

Whilst apps like Plex are great for syncing video to your iPhone or iPad for offline viewing, sometimes you just want to download a video from YouTube or Vimeo at a moment's notice. This happened to me last month just as I was about to board a plane.

The good news is that with a little setting up and some specific apps, it is entirely possible to download video content for offline use, directly to your iPad or iPhone.

Show ref: SCOM0676

iOS 11 brings with it native screen recording to your iPad or iPhone. You can record video only or both video and audio using your iOS device's microphone.

It's a great tool for creating short instructional videos for friends or family.

Once recorded, you can trim your video directly in the iOS Photos app, or use a special iMovie extension for more advanced tasks such as adding titles and music.

Parallels Toolbox

Date: 6th October 2017

Duration: 48:56

Show ref: SCOM0671

Parallels Toolbox is a very unusual application. It's a toolbox that is filled with over 20 tools that each do one thing and do it well. While much of its capability can be accomplished via other utilities, Parallels Toolbox contains them all in one simple interface. It replaces the need for complicated Terminal commands or hard-to-remember keystrokes. Whether it's keeping your Mac awake, finding duplicate files, or making animated GIFs, Parallels Toolbox has got it. (It even works on Windows!)

In this episode, Allison Sheridan will walk you through each tool, and show you how to configure them to get the most out of each one.

iWork - After recently finishing a series of update shows for Pages, Numbers and Keynote, Apple have just released a slew of updates - some minor, some quite significant. Learn all about them with this latest update segment.

Recently launched by Apple, Clips is a brand new way to capture and edit video on your iPhone or iPad.

iMovie is great, but sometimes you just want to assemble a short video to post quickly to your favourite social media service, share with iCloud Photo sharing or just email to someone.

Clips allows you to rapidly capture live video, photos, or video and photos in your iCloud Photo library and create a mini movie with just a few taps. You can annotate your movie with live titles, just by talking, as well as adding stickers, filters, emojis and more in a flash.

Despite seeming a very simple application, Clips actually has some hidden depths, and allows you to do much more than can you imagine.

Record all your video devices live simultaneously, and let RecoLive MultiCam composite a final video directly on your iOS device, or export the multiple camera angles to separate video files and use iMovie or FCP X to create your final video.

You’ll be amazed at what can be achieved with this inexpensive yet incredibly powerful app.

Scapple, AccessMenuBarApp, VideoGIF

Duration: 31:28

Show ref: SCOM0466

Three applications in this week's show:

Scapple - Scapple is a great app from the makers of Scrivener - it's like a mind mapping tool but without the constraints of a fixed or hierarchical structure. Completely free form in its approach, Scapple is ideal for roughing out ideas on a huge canvas.

AccessMenuBarApp - Is your laptop resolution causing menu bar icons to become hidden? AccessMenuBarApp allows you to show them all with a single keystroke or mouse gesture.

VideoGIF - Create animated GIFs for support or just for fun. VideoGIF allows you to capture or convert any video clip into an animated GIF and share via social networks, email or via websites. In this segment, I demonstrate using QuickTime X to do a video screencapture, convert to a GIF and incorporate into a Clarify document.
