Time for an update show this week, with updates to some of our favourite apps!

Plex - We've covered Plex many times for managing recorded media, but now you can watch and record Live "off the air" TV with the addition of a hardware tuner. This segment describes what you need and demonstrates how easy it is to configure.

iWork - After recently finishing a series of update shows for Pages, Numbers and Keynote, Apple have just released a slew of updates - some minor, some quite significant. Learn all about them with this latest update segment.

Synology NAS - Part 3

Date: 14th April 2017

Duration: 48:32

Show ref: SCOM0621

The third and final part of the current series on setting up and using a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) device.

Once you've started to store lots of important data on your NAS, you'll want to be sure that your data is safely secured with an offsite backup.

Synology Cloud Station ShareSync allows you to sync your important files with another Synology NAS, or you can use Cloud Sync to backup your files to a third-party cloud service like DropBox, BackBlaze, Google Drive, Box and many other services. In this episode, we demonstrate setting up and using both of these important packages.

If your primary reason for wanting a NAS is for it to act as a media server, we also demonstrate the initial setup, configuration and ongoing maintenance of Plex Media Server - installed directly on your Synology NAS.

Finally, we take a look at the surprisingly powerful Synology Surveillance Station, a free suite of utilities that turn your Synology NAS into a video recording hub for home or business security.

We hope you've found these Synology NAS tutorials useful and we'll revisit the topic in the future. If you have any specific areas of configuring or using a Synology NAS you would like us to cover in future shows, please let us know.

Plex is a complete solution for local and online media. It's been a couple of years since I abandoned Plex and stuck with a rigid 100% Apple solution for my media playback, the main issue being playing content on the AppleTV.

However, recent developments in the Plex ecosystem has caused my to re-evaluate my stance and convinced me to return to Plex. Boy, has it changed and improved! Plus, it's now possible to configure your Apple TV to access your Plex Library, along with virtually every other device.

In this show, I take you through digitising personal media such as DVDs and Blu-Rays in preparation for creating your digital media library in Plex. I also demonstrate installing the Plex Media Server, and take a brief look at configuring your Plex Media Server and using various clients for playback.

A bit sooner than expected, but this week I couldn't wait to show you PLEX, a stunning media centre application for Intel based Macs running OSX Leopard. This follows on from the recent Mac mini Media Centre episode, where I started the process of using the newly upgraded Mac mini as a full blown media centre.

PLEX is based on the original code for the XBMC (XBox Media Centre) but has forked into a separate development specifically for Intel based Macs running OSX Leopard.
