[00:00:04.717] - [Todd] Hi, this is Todd Olthoff
[00:00:06.142] and welcome to another edition of ScreenCasts Online.
[00:00:09.990] This week we will take a look at a free-from creation
[00:00:12.777] and project management application
[00:00:14.575] called Curio 11 by Zengobi.
[00:00:17.640] Curio is a free-from notebook
[00:00:19.440] with just about every tool you can think of
[00:00:21.367] to help you take notes, brainstorm ideas
[00:00:23.817] collect research and organise your tasks and documents.
[00:00:27.480] Curio is a powerful tool that includes the functions
[00:00:30.080] of many stand-alone applications
[00:00:32.199] allowing you to focus on the task at hand
[00:00:34.149] without having to worry about switching applications
[00:00:36.303] for different aspects of your project.
[00:00:38.933] Curio also includes a well thought out
[00:00:40.802] GTD style metadata system
[00:00:43.176] to help you track projects and deadlines
[00:00:45.103] right within the application.
[00:00:47.246] In this screencast we will attempt to cover
[00:00:49.202] as many of the tools as we can
[00:00:50.839] to give you an idea how you might use Curio
[00:00:53.119] in your own situation.
[00:00:54.936] So let's get started by looking at the installation
[00:00:57.305] and setup of Curio 11.
[00:01:04.033] Okay, so here we are over on Zengobi.com
[00:01:06.906] and this is Curio 11.
[00:01:09.037] Now Curio is a Mac-only application
[00:01:11.800] and as you can see here just taking a look at it
[00:01:14.499] it does store and hold all kinds of data
[00:01:16.803] and we're gonna go into all the details of how this works.
[00:01:19.880] Now one of the things I want to show you
[00:01:21.720] is if you just scroll down on the webpage here
[00:01:23.624] there are different versions of the application
[00:01:26.933] with different price points.
[00:01:28.622] So you can see there's the core version for 59.99
[00:01:31.565] and it lists all the things it has.
[00:01:32.947] And there's a standard version for 99.99
[00:01:34.984] and then a professional version for 139.99.
[00:01:38.923] And so it is a premium application
[00:01:41.056] because it has so many things inside of it
[00:01:43.848] and you'll find that it might even replace
[00:01:45.555] a number of applications that you've got.
[00:01:47.859] But you'll see here that this lists
[00:01:49.490] all the different things that are included
[00:01:51.319] and then the additional things that are included
[00:01:54.303] in each of the other options that are here.
[00:01:57.031] For the purposes of our screencast
[00:01:58.691] I'm going to use the professional version
[00:02:00.293] just so I can show you everything that is built into it.
[00:02:03.585] So let me go ahead and put this down.
[00:02:05.494] I've already downloaded the application
[00:02:07.085] so let's just go ahead and launch Curio for the first time.
[00:02:10.300] And it asks if it has a companion app
[00:02:13.354] that I'm gonna show you later.
[00:02:14.752] I'm just gonna say not right now.
[00:02:16.621] And Automatic Backups, I'm gonna go ahead
[00:02:19.059] and just disable those for right now.
[00:02:21.596] So this is the Curio interface
[00:02:23.256] and when you launch it for the first time
[00:02:25.311] what it does is it takes you
[00:02:26.709] into this Welcome to Curio project that's already setup.
[00:02:30.593] Now what's great about that is
[00:02:32.090] inside Curio itself it has its own
[00:02:34.548] Getting Started area, Documentation.
[00:02:37.076] It's got samples of how it works
[00:02:39.195] and so you can always come in and take a look
[00:02:41.587] at this Welcome to Curio Project whenever you want to.
[00:02:44.861] If you want to look up how to do things
[00:02:46.881] and from time-to-time you may want to do that
[00:02:48.732] and I like I said because there's so many options in here,
[00:02:51.234] in terms of getting started that you may want to go there
[00:02:53.858] and you can see if I just click on Documentation
[00:02:55.733] you can see all the extra information in here
[00:02:58.525] in different folders and such.
[00:02:59.953] And I'm gonna show you how all of this works
[00:03:01.608] so it'll be easy for you to
[00:03:02.710] navigate these things as you go.
[00:03:04.760] So what I'm going to do is let's go ahead
[00:03:06.472] and I'm going to close this.
[00:03:07.848] And let's just go ahead and do a New Blank Project
[00:03:11.337] and launch that for the first time.
[00:03:13.914] Okay, so this is the Curio Interface.
[00:03:15.952] So let's just take a look at
[00:03:17.285] some of the items that are in here.
[00:03:19.138] As you can see this looks very similar
[00:03:21.106] to Apple's iWork documents
[00:03:23.126] for things like applications like Pages or Keynote
[00:03:26.406] where you've got your Sidebar over here.
[00:03:28.310] You've got your Inspector on the side
[00:03:29.970] and you've got your Toolbar across the top
[00:03:31.926] and then your workspace is in the middle.
[00:03:34.179] And so in Curio this entire area here
[00:03:37.493] the entire application that's open right now
[00:03:40.018] is called a Project.
[00:03:41.556] So when you save this file
[00:03:43.112] the file will be saved as a Project
[00:03:45.016] and that's what it's called in Curio.
[00:03:47.031] Now down the side over here
[00:03:48.383] we have the Organiser
[00:03:49.562] and this holds and organises Idea Spaces and documents.
[00:03:53.375] Now over here on the right
[00:03:54.618] we've got what's called the Shelf.
[00:03:56.371] And this has a couple different things to it.
[00:03:58.739] You see I've got an Inspector.
[00:04:00.399] And this Inspector will change depending on
[00:04:02.607] what I'm working with here in my Idea Space.
[00:04:05.840] I can hide this at anytime just by clicking on it
[00:04:08.365] or pulling it out
[00:04:09.399] and so that's how the Shelf comes in and out of Curio.
[00:04:13.189] And then I've got some other items over here
[00:04:15.314] that I can use as well.
[00:04:16.509] You'll notice I've got a Search area
[00:04:17.879] where I can search within the application.
[00:04:20.230] I've got a Library and then I've got a Status area
[00:04:23.237] which I'll talk about.
[00:04:24.735] Again that Status area is only included
[00:04:26.772] with the Professional Version.
[00:04:28.450] So let's go back to the Inspector here.
[00:04:30.632] So across the top we've got our Toolbar.
[00:04:34.289] And so you'll see we've got a number of tools up here.
[00:04:36.414] I can hide the Organiser if I'd like to do that.
[00:04:38.823] If I want to start a new project
[00:04:40.611] I just click on this and it lets me open up a New Project
[00:04:43.560] or a blank one or get one setup
[00:04:45.893] or I can even sort different projects
[00:04:47.925] that I've got inside of Curio.
[00:04:50.598] Now let's go ahead an close that.
[00:04:52.035] I can zoom in and out of my project, right here.
[00:04:54.548] I can add different Organiser items
[00:04:58.054] so this Add button relates to this Sidebar over here.
[00:05:01.305] If I just click on that
[00:05:02.315] you'll see I can add a blank Idea Space
[00:05:04.806] and that sort of thing in here, a folder
[00:05:06.358] and I'm gonna show you what that looks like
[00:05:07.763] when we set up our organisation.
[00:05:09.336] Here are the basic tools that I've got
[00:05:11.385] to create inside of this particular Idea Space.
[00:05:15.679] I can Insert different items
[00:05:17.620] and I'm gonna cover all these different items
[00:05:19.355] that you can insert into your Idea Space.
[00:05:21.300] It's pretty extensive.
[00:05:23.033] And then across here I've got some specific areas
[00:05:26.669] that I can insert that are laid out here
[00:05:28.544] like Lists and Mind Maps and that sort of thing
[00:05:30.959] and like I said I'll go into depth on what these are.
[00:05:34.047] Then over here I've got the option to Share
[00:05:36.892] the items that I've got
[00:05:37.936] and so that's sort of like the Export
[00:05:39.684] and I'll go over that.
[00:05:41.001] I can Present, I can set this up as a presentation.
[00:05:43.782] Or I've got this Sleuth here
[00:05:45.633] which allows me to do some web searches
[00:05:47.560] for information that I want to put
[00:05:49.633] inside of my Idea Space right here.
[00:05:52.332] So that gives you an idea on just kind of a general overview
[00:05:55.269] of how the actual interface is setup.
[00:05:59.310] Okay, now that we've taken a tour of the interface
[00:06:02.044] let's go ahead and get started
[00:06:03.518] by looking at how you organise a project
[00:06:05.922] and the organisational tools that are built in to Curio.
[00:06:08.882] Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to setup a project
[00:06:12.643] where I setup all of the items I need to do a screencast
[00:06:16.219] for ScreenCasts Online.
[00:06:17.700] That way we've got an actual project we're working on
[00:06:20.027] so that you can kind of see the reasoning behind it
[00:06:21.995] so then you can apply that yourself
[00:06:23.782] to different projects and things you may want to setup.
[00:06:26.499] Okay, so that's what we're going to build.
[00:06:28.432] Now one of the things over here in the analogy.
[00:06:30.708] Like I said, this entire document here is a project.
[00:06:34.881] If I just hit on the organiser here
[00:06:36.924] if I just toggle the Sections area
[00:06:39.246] you'll notice that I've got these Sections areas in here
[00:06:41.608] I've got a Default Section, I've got an Archive
[00:06:43.610] and I've got the Trash.
[00:06:44.812] And then down here is where I would put my Idea Spaces.
[00:06:47.668] Now what this is is if this entire project
[00:06:50.460] is like a notebook, if we're gonna use that analogy.
[00:06:53.589] Then these Sections, right here
[00:06:55.272] are like dividers in the notebook, right?
[00:06:57.129] Little tabs that you would put into your notebook
[00:06:59.591] to determine what sections are in between there.
[00:07:03.050] And so on this one what I'm going to do
[00:07:04.757] is let's just rename this Default section.
[00:07:06.689] We're gonna put this down as SCO Project.
[00:07:11.998] Okay, so I'm just gonna put it like that
[00:07:14.015] and one of the things I can do with these
[00:07:15.856] is I can customise this a little bit.
[00:07:17.812] If I just Control Click on this,
[00:07:20.145] you'll notice I get this Dropdown menu
[00:07:22.026] and inside of here I can do a few different things.
[00:07:24.528] I can create a new section if I want.
[00:07:26.211] I can Rename the one I'm looking at.
[00:07:28.876] I can move it to an Archive.
[00:07:30.263] There is the archive that's setup there
[00:07:32.220] for things that I'm not using anymore.
[00:07:33.683] If I just want to move them to an archive
[00:07:35.023] I don't want to delete them but I want to look at them later
[00:07:36.799] but I don't want them showing
[00:07:38.297] I can put them in the Archive.
[00:07:40.561] I've also got a Delete here
[00:07:41.791] where I can put things in the Trash.
[00:07:43.788] Now, very to important to understand with the Trash
[00:07:45.785] there is no Empty Trash icon or feature here.
[00:07:49.146] It just automatically empties the trash
[00:07:50.957] when you close the project.
[00:07:52.629] All right, that's important to understand.
[00:07:54.510] And then down here I can actually colour code
[00:07:57.116] the actual sections if I want to do that
[00:07:59.548] and so like in this case let's go ahead
[00:08:00.965] and just put, let's put red.
[00:08:02.718] So now we've got this Section in red, here.
[00:08:05.597] And I can add as many Sections as I want to
[00:08:08.401] just by putting them in here.
[00:08:09.527] Like I said I can do that from that contextual menu.
[00:08:12.011] I can also hit the Add area over here
[00:08:14.931] and I can add a section right from here as well
[00:08:16.765] if I wanted to add another area in this notebook.
[00:08:19.372] For our cases I'm just going to leave this simply here,
[00:08:23.279] just with one Section.
[00:08:24.991] But you can start to see how you might want to build out
[00:08:27.388] an entire project with different Sections
[00:08:29.443] depending on how you want to divide that up.
[00:08:31.899] Now once I've got the Sections setup
[00:08:33.820] I've got my divider in the notebook set.
[00:08:36.049] Down below here is where I can add Folders
[00:08:39.997] and Idea Spaces for organisation.
[00:08:43.166] Again, I would do the same thing, I can come up here to Add
[00:08:46.132] and I can add things.
[00:08:47.055] Like for instance, I can add a Folder
[00:08:49.128] and I can name the folder whatever I want.
[00:08:51.229] Let's say I want to name it Research.
[00:08:53.121] Let's say I want to put Research in a folder.
[00:08:55.107] I can then take these different idea spaces
[00:08:57.121] and actually put them inside the folder
[00:08:59.396] and I can close and open the folders
[00:09:01.033] with the little Reveal triangle here.
[00:09:03.320] Let me go ahead and just take this out for a minute.
[00:09:05.915] So that shows you how the Folders work.
[00:09:08.220] In fact I'm just going to Delete this particular folder.
[00:09:11.522] Again you can see here I can colour code it as well
[00:09:13.716] just like I could on the other one.
[00:09:15.957] But I'm just gonna go and say Delete.
[00:09:18.372] Now let's go ahead and start naming
[00:09:19.986] some of these different projects.
[00:09:22.017] What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna call this a Project Workflow
[00:09:24.664] and that's what I'm gonna call this space.
[00:09:26.667] So Project Flow, and I'll show you why I'm doing that.
[00:09:29.505] So that's one of the things I'm gonna add on there.
[00:09:31.706] Another thing I'm going to do
[00:09:32.820] is I'm going to Add another Blank Idea Space, here.
[00:09:35.856] And I'm gonna call this one Research.
[00:09:39.861] Cause I want to have an area there
[00:09:41.278] where I'm doing some research and setting that up.
[00:09:44.151] Now what I can do as well
[00:09:45.684] is I can also Add a Idea Space with different Styles.
[00:09:50.902] And so if I go to the Idea Space Gallery
[00:09:52.934] you'll notice I've got all kinds of different templates
[00:09:55.471] that I can use to set up a different Idea Space.
[00:09:57.967] I can use all kinds of things.
[00:10:00.201] I've got this grid here, I've got parchment style paper
[00:10:04.404] silver, metal, I can set whatever background I want.
[00:10:07.156] And so it comes with these bundled Styles that are in here
[00:10:10.267] and I can even add my own Styles
[00:10:12.130] if I want to do that as well.
[00:10:13.407] I can put in different textures, different backgrounds
[00:10:16.751] whatever it is that I want to add.
[00:10:18.324] You'll notice that those same Styles
[00:10:19.822] show up over here as well,
[00:10:21.470] you can see under the bundled area.
[00:10:23.015] So even in here, I can go to the different Sections
[00:10:26.939] just like I've got over here when I'm looking to add an idea
[00:10:31.031] from the different Space Gallery.
[00:10:32.424] So even if I add a blank one
[00:10:33.632] I can change the style later if I want to do that
[00:10:36.720] but that's how that's setup.
[00:10:38.072] And then if I do my own personal ones
[00:10:39.634] I can set those in here too.
[00:10:40.847] Right now I don't have anything setup.
[00:10:42.664] So what I'm gonna do is just add a Blank Space
[00:10:44.910] so we're just gonna tap on Add.
[00:10:46.559] So I've got another Blank Space there
[00:10:48.497] and so let's say in this one I want to make this an outline
[00:10:51.319] cause I want to an outline for my screencast,
[00:10:53.675] so I'm going to do that.
[00:10:55.115] Now one of the things I can do in the organisation
[00:10:57.536] with that is I can also put in sub-areas here
[00:11:02.487] where I can actually nest this.
[00:11:04.124] So if I just hover over the Research there
[00:11:06.173] I can nest that and have the Reveal triangle
[00:11:09.134] happen that way as well
[00:11:10.690] as another way to organise my particular setup.
[00:11:13.894] So what I'm going to do is I'm gonna go ahead
[00:11:15.781] and setup the organisational Flow
[00:11:18.155] for putting together a screencast
[00:11:20.901] and then what we'll do is we'll start to customise
[00:11:22.752] each of these areas and I'll show you how to do that
[00:11:25.283] in the Idea Spaces itself.
[00:11:27.576] Okay, so now I've got my setup all organised over here.
[00:11:30.827] You can see I've got my Project Flow
[00:11:32.597] I've got an area for Research
[00:11:34.124] I've got an idea area for Preparation
[00:11:35.923] with my outline and script.
[00:11:37.769] I've also got a Record area for different project files
[00:11:40.927] and then the Deliver area with a checklist.
[00:11:42.936] So I've got my setup here
[00:11:44.912] everything's organised the way I want it.
[00:11:46.929] Now let's talk about how we customise
[00:11:49.066] each of these Idea Spaces themselves.
[00:11:51.747] You'll notice I've got the Inspector out right here
[00:11:54.035] and I can do a number of things to customise the background.
[00:11:56.740] I can change Styles if I want, so if I just click on this
[00:11:59.503] you'll notice now I've got a paper style
[00:12:01.952] and I can just kind of go through
[00:12:03.305] these different styles if I want.
[00:12:04.959] I can also do things with solid colours or gradients
[00:12:07.955] you can see, or radials.
[00:12:09.615] If I want to setup nice backgrounds there.
[00:12:12.436] I've got some things for page breaks.
[00:12:14.323] I also have the option
[00:12:15.722] to take a look at different backdrops.
[00:12:18.229] You can see there's a bunch of different colours here
[00:12:20.133] if I wanted to do that.
[00:12:21.218] I can just Clear it here if I want to go back to white.
[00:12:24.057] And in here I've got things like fabrics,
[00:12:26.977] lines that I can select, so lined paper.
[00:12:30.111] Different miscellaneous items there
[00:12:32.195] different paper textures.
[00:12:34.163] I've even got subtlepatterns.com styles in here
[00:12:37.326] for different patterns and things that I can get a hold of.
[00:12:39.370] And then I've got my Desktops
[00:12:40.786] and those are the desktops
[00:12:41.779] that are a part of Apple Desktops.
[00:12:43.723] And then solid colours if I want to do that.
[00:12:46.858] Now I've also got the option to choose a custom folder
[00:12:49.575] and if I just click on this
[00:12:51.252] I can go in and choose an actual folder that I want
[00:12:55.037] that might have different wallpapers in it.
[00:12:57.220] Again because this has different styles
[00:12:59.037] it doesn't actually show that.
[00:13:00.708] But I could go in and select a folder
[00:13:02.717] that had a bunch of different items in them
[00:13:04.708] and it would allow those items to be selected.
[00:13:06.804] I'm just gonna say Cancel.
[00:13:08.295] So I can change this background
[00:13:10.031] to however I want to set that up.
[00:13:11.738] In my case I'm just gonna leave it the way it is
[00:13:13.926] but I could also scale the opacity,
[00:13:15.859] so for instance if I put this on here
[00:13:17.507] I could scale the opacity up and down
[00:13:19.464] to make it exactly the way I want it.
[00:13:20.921] I can scale it to fit or proportionally centred or tiled.
[00:13:24.926] I can also set up different grid-lines
[00:13:27.099] if I wanted to setup grid-lines.
[00:13:29.020] So I can do horizontal
[00:13:30.767] or vertical so there, I've created my own grid.
[00:13:33.560] I can have it be snapping lines or not
[00:13:36.747] and really just make it the way
[00:13:37.936] that I want to make the background.
[00:13:39.922] In our case I'm just gonna leave it as a white
[00:13:42.162] because that's a little easier for us to work with.
[00:13:44.525] Now the other thing I can do with a particular space
[00:13:47.282] is I can setup the metadata for it.
[00:13:49.662] Now what that means is I can set tags
[00:13:51.764] for these different workspaces.
[00:13:53.807] So in this case I'm gonna set a tag for SEO
[00:13:56.576] so I can check one.
[00:13:57.725] I can also type in this area to setup a tag as well.
[00:14:01.150] I've got flags that I can set on it
[00:14:03.495] if I wanted to flag an item.
[00:14:04.807] Especially if I'm doing different kinds of tasks
[00:14:06.729] and things like that.
[00:14:07.623] Look at all the different flags that I've got
[00:14:09.823] with emojis and everything else that I can put on it.
[00:14:12.243] I can also put in detailed ideas if I wanted to.
[00:14:14.612] So say this is an idea
[00:14:16.208] you can see now it says, Detailed Task Idea.
[00:14:18.983] I can put context in like you do with GTD
[00:14:22.100] and there's even GTD specific tags that you can put in.
[00:14:24.904] As well as months, if you want to put in
[00:14:26.099] the month that you're doing it.
[00:14:27.844] So let's go ahead and do that.
[00:14:29.053] So now I've been able to put all of these tags on here.
[00:14:31.486] I can also put the labels down here as well
[00:14:33.436] if I wanted to put a label on a particular item.
[00:14:35.944] Now where this will come in handy
[00:14:37.427] is when we do our searches for certain items
[00:14:39.540] I'll show you how that works when we talk about search.
[00:14:42.215] I can also look at the dimensions of the file here
[00:14:45.185] and change the different dimensions on points
[00:14:47.473] or pages or screens if I wanted to.
[00:14:50.233] And then there's a Project area
[00:14:51.925] that lets me do some advanced things like put an image
[00:14:54.008] for the actual project that will show up in the finder
[00:14:56.466] as well as calendar sync and a few other things
[00:14:58.649] that I can put in there as well.
[00:15:01.177] So that gives you an idea of how that works.
[00:15:02.663] Now the beauty of this is
[00:15:03.840] is I don't have to have the Inspector out
[00:15:05.948] if I want to get access to all of this.
[00:15:07.804] I actually have those things
[00:15:08.931] across the top here with these icons.
[00:15:11.127] If you notice I've got right here
[00:15:12.569] the actual styles Inspector.
[00:15:14.663] When you come to this next one here
[00:15:16.425] I've got the background Inspector
[00:15:17.899] with the colour image and grid information
[00:15:20.732] that we looked at right here.
[00:15:22.065] See there's style, there's colour
[00:15:23.558] and there's image right there.
[00:15:25.758] Let's get rid of that.
[00:15:27.357] I can get access to the tags and labels here
[00:15:29.791] if I wanted to do that right there.
[00:15:31.790] I also have a note area where I can toggle a note field
[00:15:34.832] and I'm gonna show you how to use that
[00:15:36.175] when we do our specifics insider different ideas spaces.
[00:15:39.927] There is a transition Inspector
[00:15:41.953] if I want to do transitions for presentations
[00:15:44.109] and then some info on the particular project
[00:15:47.534] if I want to put a little bit more info into it as well.
[00:15:50.812] And then here I've got the dimensions Inspector
[00:15:53.940] which is the same as this one right here.
[00:15:55.978] You can see and then I've also got
[00:15:57.796] the project Inspector here as well
[00:16:00.683] where I can set up sync and advanced right from there.
[00:16:04.301] So it is nice that I can close this if I want
[00:16:06.921] to have all of the space available
[00:16:08.636] and still get access to the Inspector items across the top.
[00:16:11.327] This has been really well thought out.
[00:16:13.617] So now that we've taken a look at how to customise
[00:16:15.863] the actual idea spaces, now let's take a look at
[00:16:18.676] starting to add text and other things
[00:16:20.832] that fill this out so it becomes usable.
[00:16:24.019] Okay now that we've got our idea spaces
[00:16:26.030] all set up and configured
[00:16:27.702] let's go ahead and start to work with the various items
[00:16:30.985] that we want to insert into this space.
[00:16:33.319] Now inserted items are called figures inside of Curio.
[00:16:37.638] And so these are the different figures that we can insert
[00:16:40.476] and you can see it's quite a list of things we can do.
[00:16:43.019] So let's start with dealing with.
[00:16:45.156] You can see basic shapes here.
[00:16:47.250] I can deal with text or lines
[00:16:49.920] of different kinds and different shapes.
[00:16:51.874] So let's go ahead and just get started with text.
[00:16:53.700] So I'm just gonna say insert and you notice when I do that
[00:16:56.548] I get this little text box that's been inserted right here.
[00:16:59.485] Now right above that
[00:17:00.820] all of a sudden the toolbar changes now
[00:17:02.927] and I've got the option to do
[00:17:05.066] a number of things to customise it.
[00:17:07.058] You can see I can change the actual text type.
[00:17:10.634] I can come in here and change the size of the text
[00:17:13.616] and make it a little bit bigger.
[00:17:15.251] I can make it bold and change the colours of it.
[00:17:18.137] For instance, I can change the colour
[00:17:20.059] let's go to a more red colour
[00:17:22.626] so that I can make that stand out.
[00:17:24.759] Or I can also pop the Inspector out here
[00:17:27.537] if I want to do that.
[00:17:28.552] And I've got some things
[00:17:29.688] I can play with, with styles in here.
[00:17:31.253] See I can put different things around my text.
[00:17:34.345] And down here as well, I can change this to
[00:17:37.013] let's change it to ultra light, let's make it thinner
[00:17:39.862] and then let's go ahead and make it a Title case
[00:17:42.537] so that that way it's the title size there.
[00:17:45.769] And I just want to go ahead and increase this to
[00:17:47.978] let's go up to 69 there.
[00:17:51.899] So now that I've got this text, I can come here
[00:17:53.975] and let's just type Project Workflow
[00:17:57.563] so that it matches what I have over there.
[00:18:00.370] And once I grab it you see I can move it around
[00:18:02.683] and with this particular figure
[00:18:04.626] each of the figures has their own Inspector as well.
[00:18:07.162] And you can see all the different things I can do.
[00:18:09.008] I can add shapes around it I can add fill, filling lines.
[00:18:13.731] I can go ahead and add opacity to it.
[00:18:16.510] Put different lines and properties in there
[00:18:19.196] and so there's a number of things I can do
[00:18:20.758] to this particular item.
[00:18:22.186] I also have metadata for this as well.
[00:18:24.652] I can change the size by moving the slider here.
[00:18:27.459] I can put a check mark in there
[00:18:29.619] and if it's a project type of a thing
[00:18:31.602] I can set a priority, I could even put tags on it.
[00:18:34.333] So that I can have tags within my figure
[00:18:36.178] so if I want to search for particular figures later
[00:18:38.713] I can do that with the tags and such that I have on there.
[00:18:42.134] And then I've got geometry where I can move it around
[00:18:45.031] and rotate it and that sort of thing.
[00:18:47.267] So I'm just gonna leave it the way it is
[00:18:48.744] but just wanted to show you that you can do that
[00:18:50.743] with your particular text.
[00:18:52.778] Now the other thing that I can do
[00:18:54.345] and I'm just gonna go ahead and
[00:18:56.163] I'm just gonna leave that Inspector open for a minute.
[00:18:58.127] Is I can insert other things as well.
[00:19:00.215] I can insert styled shapes or stencils
[00:19:03.060] and you can see here that when I do that
[00:19:05.013] I get all kinds of styles.
[00:19:07.269] And you can see all the different styles
[00:19:08.927] to the text that are in here.
[00:19:10.585] So it give me just a little bit more.
[00:19:12.698] Or I can also look at stencils.
[00:19:14.533] And these set-up, pre-done stencils
[00:19:17.942] that I can add things to.
[00:19:19.121] So I've got an auditorium set up
[00:19:20.583] if I needed to set up something for a classroom
[00:19:22.833] or how I want to set up chairs.
[00:19:24.449] I've got a bubble map, I've got double bubble maps.
[00:19:27.084] I've got these into one another type of things.
[00:19:30.796] A prong, I've got timelines, Venn diagrams
[00:19:33.775] and Venn lists that I can put in there.
[00:19:35.737] So there's a lot of neat things that I can set up.
[00:19:38.152] What I'd like to do is just a simple process line here
[00:19:40.324] so I'm gonna double-click this
[00:19:42.159] and you see that I have these items
[00:19:43.969] that I can do separately instead of together.
[00:19:46.797] So I'm gonna choose this one here and say insert.
[00:19:49.591] And so now I get this item that I can move around
[00:19:52.024] and you can see how I can just set it
[00:19:53.455] however I want to set it.
[00:19:55.155] What I'm going to do is I'm going to come in here
[00:19:57.024] and I'm going to title this and I'm gonna call it research
[00:20:03.152] because that's one of the first things that I have
[00:20:04.690] in my timeline over here in my time flow.
[00:20:07.527] And the same thing happens with this.
[00:20:09.471] You see I can customise the shape
[00:20:11.584] change the colour, got a number of things
[00:20:13.831] that I can do with it.
[00:20:14.909] I can do metadata on it as well in terms of tags and such
[00:20:18.316] and then geometry where I can move it around
[00:20:20.093] if I want to, and customise.
[00:20:22.231] See I can rotate that around.
[00:20:25.017] I'm just gonna reset it to zero.
[00:20:26.827] So I've got a number of things that I can do with it.
[00:20:29.133] And what I'm going to do
[00:20:30.227] is just set this up so that I've got a flow
[00:20:32.803] for each of these items down here on the side.
[00:20:35.000] So let me do that and I'll show you what it looks like.
[00:20:37.776] Okay so here we are I've created my flow here
[00:20:40.292] with one of these for each of the major project areas
[00:20:42.775] going all the way across.
[00:20:44.518] In case you want to know how I made that
[00:20:46.092] I just came on here in the shape Inspector
[00:20:47.986] change the colour right here
[00:20:49.745] and then what I did was under geometry
[00:20:52.001] to get the square to go behind the arrow here
[00:20:54.341] I just clicked on this move front to back
[00:20:56.916] until the arrow showed so that I could
[00:20:58.796] lay these on top of each other.
[00:21:00.521] So that's how I created that.
[00:21:02.533] Now what I want to do is I want to be able to
[00:21:03.937] click on these and have them take me to
[00:21:05.999] the different project areas.
[00:21:07.489] Well I can do that inside of Curio by doing this.
[00:21:10.469] If I just come over here to research.
[00:21:11.555] I'm gonna come up to Edit and I'm going to say copy.
[00:21:14.891] So I've copied that and what I'm gonna do
[00:21:16.700] is come over here and select this arrow right here
[00:21:19.781] and I'm going to control click to get my menu here
[00:21:23.123] and if I go to paste as, you notice
[00:21:24.646] I have different options to paste.
[00:21:26.940] I can paste it as a jump action for the selected figure
[00:21:29.587] which would put an icon on the end here.
[00:21:31.750] Now that doesn't give me enough flexibility
[00:21:33.406] because I can't keep putting icons on the ends
[00:21:35.401] because they won't look right with the other ones.
[00:21:37.463] Another thing I can do is an idea space link
[00:21:40.365] or a jump anchor and I'm gonna do a jump anchor.
[00:21:43.454] And you'll notice I get this little icon that's right here.
[00:21:46.299] Now if I just select this
[00:21:47.663] I can move this around and I'm going to.
[00:21:49.582] Let me just resize it, let's make it bigger so we can see it
[00:21:52.132] and I'm just gonna put this little icon on there.
[00:21:54.371] Now what what that does
[00:21:55.407] is if I come and I double-click on it
[00:21:57.158] it takes me right to the area that I want to go to.
[00:22:00.617] Now let me show you this again.
[00:22:01.828] So I'm gonna do preparation.
[00:22:03.377] We'll come up here to Edit.
[00:22:04.909] We're going to copy again
[00:22:06.382] I'm gonna come back into the project flow, select this.
[00:22:09.075] Control click and we're gonna paste as a jump anchor again.
[00:22:12.291] I'm gonna move this little icon over.
[00:22:14.277] We'll go ahead and resize it just like the other one.
[00:22:17.206] Make it a little bit bigger.
[00:22:18.240] You can see we can align it up, get it where we want it.
[00:22:20.959] And then the same thing here.
[00:22:22.162] If I double-click on this
[00:22:23.442] it takes me now to the preparation page.
[00:22:25.243] So that's a nice way to be able
[00:22:27.028] to jump around your document and really get it set
[00:22:29.359] so that it makes it a lot quicker to move through it.
[00:22:31.969] And so I'm going to go ahead and just put it right there.
[00:22:34.586] Now once I've got this set up and ready to go
[00:22:36.947] couple things that I can do.
[00:22:38.534] If I wanted to I could attach a note to this.
[00:22:40.891] If I just come up here and I get my note area right here
[00:22:44.359] I can to attach a note and say you know
[00:22:47.484] remember to do research let's just say
[00:22:51.894] I'm gonna make something up on here
[00:22:53.157] just to show you what this looks like.
[00:22:54.504] And it's a free-form note.
[00:22:55.867] I can configure it and format it.
[00:22:57.702] And if I just let go of it, what it's going to do
[00:22:59.512] is it creates a little note icon over here
[00:23:02.265] attached to this figure.
[00:23:03.853] So that at anytime I can click on that
[00:23:05.688] and take a look at the note
[00:23:07.068] and the information that I've written.
[00:23:08.381] Now again, see how we can't see this so well.
[00:23:10.797] I can get rid of the Inspector.
[00:23:12.733] The other thing I can do is zoom in and out
[00:23:14.366] or if I can use pinch to zoom the document in and out
[00:23:17.186] so that I can see a little bit better.
[00:23:18.836] And so there is all my information right there
[00:23:21.260] of my different timelines.
[00:23:22.817] So again I would add in those different icons there.
[00:23:25.460] So now that we've got that all set and ready to go
[00:23:28.027] let's go ahead and add one more thing.
[00:23:30.687] I'm just gonna come in here
[00:23:32.606] and let's go ahead and add an icon here.
[00:23:36.131] So that we've got our SCO icon set up there
[00:23:39.431] since this is what I'm doing it for.
[00:23:41.628] And you can drag-and-drop icons and images
[00:23:44.397] into your document as well.
[00:23:46.350] So now that we've got that set up
[00:23:47.755] let's go ahead and take a look
[00:23:49.087] at some of the other figures
[00:23:50.432] that we can insert by looking at the research area.
[00:23:54.024] Okay now let's take a look at how to use some of the other
[00:23:57.365] items up here in the research area.
[00:23:59.423] Now you'll notice I added the research title here.
[00:24:02.314] I did copy and paste it, but what you can do
[00:24:04.743] is you can set up a template
[00:24:07.678] so that the shows up other places.
[00:24:09.611] Let me just click on this, control click on it.
[00:24:12.780] I can save this as a style or as a template.
[00:24:15.880] Now here's the difference.
[00:24:17.258] A style is just for the background stuff
[00:24:19.522] it wouldn't include the text.
[00:24:21.029] The template would include the text with it
[00:24:23.118] so that's why I want to save it as a template.
[00:24:25.382] And so I can name it whatever I want
[00:24:27.333] and I'm gonna say SCO Research, let's say.
[00:24:30.912] Let's put that on there.
[00:24:32.218] And I'm gonna save it, I can either save it personally
[00:24:34.595] so that it can be used in other projects
[00:24:38.880] as a master project, master style for this entire project
[00:24:41.669] which I don't want to do.
[00:24:42.870] Or a dynamic master for the project
[00:24:45.445] and for personal use in other areas.
[00:24:47.526] I don't want it as a style across-the-board
[00:24:49.433] I just want it for this one thing
[00:24:50.966] so I'm gonna save it right there.
[00:24:52.751] Now let's say I want to start some research
[00:24:55.180] and so I'm on another page here.
[00:24:56.983] And so what I'm going to do is
[00:24:58.533] I'm going to come up here
[00:25:00.701] and I'm going to add an idea from the space gallery.
[00:25:05.262] And you can see all the different styles over here bundled.
[00:25:08.081] Under my personal area though, under template
[00:25:10.511] you see I've got a research one now.
[00:25:12.022] And if I just say add
[00:25:12.855] now it's gonna add another research area there.
[00:25:16.188] Now it's naming it SCO Research.
[00:25:17.698] because that's what I called it.
[00:25:19.022] So I'm just going to take that off
[00:25:20.815] and I'll just nest it inside of here
[00:25:22.722] so that I've got this research page
[00:25:24.236] that now follows the same template
[00:25:26.857] that I have for everything else.
[00:25:28.328] So that's how you use those styles and templates
[00:25:30.301] and have those set up
[00:25:31.320] so you don't have to keep redoing things.
[00:25:33.305] So now let's go ahead and do some research.
[00:25:35.360] There's a bunch of different things that I can do for this.
[00:25:37.990] For instance, if I say insert here
[00:25:41.238] I'm gonna skip down a little bit
[00:25:42.866] to some of these things that I can do here with web.
[00:25:45.870] So I can set up a web view if I want to.
[00:25:48.047] And let's say I want to do some research on the web here
[00:25:51.251] and you'll notice that
[00:25:52.566] when I click that I get a web browser.
[00:25:53.933] So I get this window right inside of my project here.
[00:25:57.408] And let me just resize it a little bit
[00:25:59.567] so that I got it right below here.
[00:26:01.343] And it's a regular Google search.
[00:26:02.911] You notice I've got a web browser bar up here
[00:26:06.803] and I can type in either inside of here or up here
[00:26:10.808] and so let's say I'm gonna type in Curio 11 app
[00:26:14.770] and let's just go ahead and type that in and do a search.
[00:26:16.930] And so here I can see
[00:26:18.421] I got Zengobi's website that's come up
[00:26:20.489] and I've got some other information.
[00:26:23.310] Here's something that Macdrifter did.
[00:26:25.109] Let's say I'm interested in that
[00:26:26.520] and I pull that up and I go oh yeah
[00:26:28.026] okay this is great information
[00:26:29.916] I want to keep this is part of my research.
[00:26:32.071] So what I can do then is just click on save URL
[00:26:35.584] so it's gonna save that for me and I'll say stop browsing.
[00:26:38.022] And now it's fixed that in time
[00:26:39.773] so now I can move it around and size it however I want.
[00:26:43.473] And just go ahead and resize it.
[00:26:46.025] Now notice how I get this big G when I resize it
[00:26:48.358] that's because I need to start browsing again
[00:26:50.187] so it can capture the part of the window I want.
[00:26:52.372] And you notice that now when I'm browsing
[00:26:53.914] I can go ahead and scroll through the window
[00:26:55.829] and get my information there.
[00:26:57.606] And so that's a great way to do that.
[00:26:59.086] I just hit on, I can say stop browsing
[00:27:00.914] and now it's just gonna fix it in time for me.
[00:27:02.874] If I want to come back and look at it again
[00:27:04.467] I start browsing and then I can go through
[00:27:06.113] and browse again and make that work.
[00:27:08.403] So let's go ahead and just say stop.
[00:27:10.144] Okay, when I click off it, the bar is gone.
[00:27:11.973] So there's one part of research that I've got.
[00:27:14.559] And so let's go ahead and add another one.
[00:27:16.466] We're gonna add another one from Gallery.
[00:27:18.190] We're gonna add the same thing.
[00:27:19.853] And we can add some more information.
[00:27:21.795] And so there's other ways I can work with a web browser.
[00:27:24.172] For instance, I can just come in here
[00:27:26.610] and let's say I like this particular search right here.
[00:27:31.303] Let's say I want to get this particular website.
[00:27:34.316] If I just slide this down a little bit
[00:27:36.284] I can then just grab the actual website
[00:27:38.992] and drag it into my document here
[00:27:41.648] and you see I get it as a link.
[00:27:43.607] And I got that as a link now that I can move around.
[00:27:46.541] And I can situate the link
[00:27:47.717] and then I can just click off the link
[00:27:49.162] to where I want to go with that as well.
[00:27:51.922] I can also just right-click on it
[00:27:53.925] and I've got a couple of other things that I can do
[00:27:56.624] and I can say grab as a web archive.
[00:27:59.541] And if I do that, it's gonna create a web archive
[00:28:01.858] that now I don't need the browser around
[00:28:04.304] I've got this web archive that is present that shows
[00:28:06.917] the information that I want that I can resize.
[00:28:09.642] And you noticed it's done it is a PDF
[00:28:11.314] because I've got annotation information up here
[00:28:13.826] where I can annotate it as a PDF.
[00:28:15.955] And you notice it kept the link for me too
[00:28:17.984] so that I can get to the link
[00:28:19.499] whenever I want to get to that as well.
[00:28:21.232] So there's a couple ways you can do that.
[00:28:23.609] Now let's say on the same page
[00:28:25.377] I want to put in a video in here on how to do some stuff.
[00:28:29.469] If I just come up here to insert
[00:28:31.716] I can click on a YouTube video.
[00:28:33.527] If I do that, all I need to do is paste a URL in here.
[00:28:36.957] Well if I just come over to a website here.
[00:28:39.735] Here I've got a URL, I'm going to just
[00:28:42.696] go ahead and copy that URL and bring it back up here.
[00:28:46.388] I'm gonna go back to inserting a YouTube video
[00:28:49.453] and I'll paste that in there and I'm going to say insert.
[00:28:52.587] And so now it's brought up that YouTube page for me
[00:28:56.105] and so I've got this and you can see it'll play.
[00:28:58.003] It'll actually play the video for me.
[00:28:59.910] Show me how all of that works, so I can say stop playing.
[00:29:02.958] And when I do that, I can move it to wherever I want
[00:29:05.013] and resize it as well to fit on my page there.
[00:29:09.994] And then I just say start playing again
[00:29:11.831] and now it'll put it back into play.
[00:29:14.321] And now that's something that I can use.
[00:29:16.315] And not only can I do that
[00:29:17.621] but I can also drag videos in here as well.
[00:29:20.277] And this works for Vimeo as well as for YouTube
[00:29:23.081] if I wanted to use the insert area
[00:29:24.918] or like I said I could drag it in as well.
[00:29:27.478] And so as you see I can begin to really create
[00:29:30.639] some good research here in terms of what I want to do
[00:29:33.922] and how I want to work with my project.
[00:29:36.395] If I come up here to insert
[00:29:38.528] there's a few other things that I can do as well.
[00:29:41.375] I can put an index card in here if I wanted to
[00:29:44.710] and I can pick any style.
[00:29:46.077] So let's go ahead and just use the plain one there.
[00:29:48.237] And you see now I've got this index card
[00:29:50.039] that will float around for me
[00:29:51.546] and I can make some notes you know, be sure to watch video.
[00:29:56.152] Okay and I can put that in there.
[00:29:57.754] And when I'm done, the nice thing about these note cards
[00:29:59.983] is they can just roll up and I can stick them
[00:30:02.092] just about anywhere that I want to.
[00:30:04.159] And if I just stick it right below here
[00:30:05.779] I got my notes card and I can say.
[00:30:07.101] What was that again?
[00:30:08.153] Oh yeah, I'm supposed to watch the video.
[00:30:09.990] Again, let me just resize the page
[00:30:11.879] so you can see how this fits on the page.
[00:30:14.048] I just do that by pitch to zoom
[00:30:15.989] and then I've got these elements
[00:30:17.470] that I can move around and centre
[00:30:19.908] wherever I want to centre them.
[00:30:21.571] Let's say stop playing.
[00:30:23.060] I can put it where I want, and then that way
[00:30:25.263] I can just go ahead and organise my notes
[00:30:26.955] and everything and put them on the page
[00:30:28.901] in whatever way really works for me.
[00:30:31.301] So again, there's a whole bunch of different ways
[00:30:33.475] that I can do this.
[00:30:34.592] And you can see how you could begin to do some research.
[00:30:37.088] You can also set up an album if you wanted to
[00:30:39.483] and what that does is that sets up an album view
[00:30:43.523] where I can just insert this here.
[00:30:47.250] So I've got this title area and if I want
[00:30:49.679] I'll just shrink it down, see if I can get that shrunk
[00:30:54.364] just a little bit so that it fits in the space.
[00:30:57.925] And then what I can do, is I can just add items to it
[00:31:01.197] and so if I just drag different images in here.
[00:31:04.097] For instance, I'm just gonna copy this
[00:31:06.013] and I'll start, I'll paste it in here
[00:31:08.407] and then I'll paste another one.
[00:31:09.988] And you can see that it starts to set it up
[00:31:11.514] like an album however I want.
[00:31:12.827] And then with the Inspector, I can come in the Inspector
[00:31:15.675] and change the style if I want, of these different items.
[00:31:19.017] And so I've got some flexibility on
[00:31:20.985] the backgrounds and how I put the different data around it.
[00:31:25.321] I can also come over here into the album
[00:31:27.454] and have the different column widths
[00:31:30.162] and adjust everything that I want there
[00:31:32.496] to make the style look the way I want it to.
[00:31:35.152] The pinboard works a very similar way.
[00:31:37.937] Let's go and just add another idea space
[00:31:40.888] from our gallery here
[00:31:42.752] and so now we can do research on this.
[00:31:45.094] And let's look at the pinboard for a minute as well.
[00:31:48.017] And you'll see that the pinboard is similar
[00:31:50.696] in that I've got this set here.
[00:31:53.102] I can go ahead and size it however I want, I can title it.
[00:31:57.273] Let's see, SCO title, let's put that in there.
[00:32:00.877] And once I've done that, then I just go ahead
[00:32:03.330] and start pasting items in, and they're free-form.
[00:32:06.069] I can move them around wherever I want.
[00:32:08.284] And so with the pinboard, it just lets me resize them
[00:32:11.261] and I can have different sized items
[00:32:12.919] that I move around a pinboard
[00:32:14.265] and just lay them out however I want to lay them out
[00:32:16.563] to make them much easier to look at.
[00:32:18.274] And I've got the same kind of thing
[00:32:19.226] where I can change styles over here
[00:32:21.412] and I can change whether to show the title of items or not.
[00:32:24.625] See, the title disappears.
[00:32:26.297] Or whether I should automatically resize them or not.
[00:32:28.439] Let's go right back into here.
[00:32:31.470] Okay let's take a look at a few other things here.
[00:32:34.054] If I just go to insert, you'll notice I can insert
[00:32:36.727] a table as well, if I wanted to do that.
[00:32:39.679] And you can see the various table styles that I can do.
[00:32:42.979] There's some stencils for a weekly table or a light table
[00:32:46.671] a weekly calendar on there.
[00:32:48.499] Things that are already just built-in for you.
[00:32:51.068] Let's go ahead and go back.
[00:32:52.653] I'm just gonna kinda briefly show you these things.
[00:32:55.457] I also can do a stack
[00:32:57.302] where I can put a stack of things in here
[00:32:59.584] where I want to put tasks and things
[00:33:01.105] that I want to get done.
[00:33:02.432] And it'll just create an ongoing stack
[00:33:04.156] with this different formatting that'll let you do that.
[00:33:06.603] I also have the option to do an audio recording
[00:33:10.017] and this is kind of a nice thing.
[00:33:11.558] I can set up an audio recording.
[00:33:13.264] I can use the built-in mic
[00:33:14.620] or the mic that I'm using right now.
[00:33:16.401] And so it will then work with that mic
[00:33:19.074] so that it can hear you and then you can insert audio
[00:33:22.601] and it'll record it.
[00:33:24.069] In fact if I just do that
[00:33:25.222] you see I've got this audio recording
[00:33:26.853] and it's recording me right now
[00:33:28.917] as I talk and I can just do that to stop it
[00:33:32.504] and now it stopped that recording.
[00:33:34.585] And I've got settings, I can choose to loop it
[00:33:36.797] and that sort of thing.
[00:33:38.138] Or I can go ahead and play it back if I wanted to do that.
[00:33:41.630] And you can hear it, it would start playing it back.
[00:33:44.373] So again, really nice that I can add my own audio in here
[00:33:47.777] and I could do the same with video.
[00:33:49.824] I can do a video recording and it turns on the camera
[00:33:52.758] and I can insert it from there.
[00:33:54.308] And I'm just gonna go back instead of showing that.
[00:33:57.834] And I can also do a screen snapshot if I want to do that.
[00:34:00.637] It's got its built-in deal and I can say
[00:34:02.707] an entire window or a specific selected area.
[00:34:06.547] I can put it on the clipboard
[00:34:08.785] or right into the current idea space.
[00:34:10.551] So let's just go ahead and do that.
[00:34:11.805] I'm gonna say insert and it's going to take
[00:34:13.904] a snapshot of the blank window there
[00:34:15.932] but it sticks it right inside where I have it
[00:34:18.736] and it's ready to go.
[00:34:20.286] So again, a number of nice features.
[00:34:23.325] There's also, down here
[00:34:25.206] the ability to create an instant document
[00:34:27.931] and so you can create these different documents
[00:34:30.152] like an Apple Text file or a Pages file
[00:34:32.684] that will open on the outside
[00:34:34.478] but it'll put that document
[00:34:35.975] right inside of your document here.
[00:34:39.667] And I can also do Google Docs as well.
[00:34:42.314] There's a direct link to your Google documents
[00:34:44.404] to put those in there
[00:34:45.813] which is something you can experiment with as well.
[00:34:48.068] So again, just a robust set
[00:34:49.758] of different options that are in here.
[00:34:52.535] So now what I want to do is take a look at
[00:34:55.148] some of the mind mapping software
[00:34:57.220] that's built into Curio 11.
[00:34:59.980] Okay, so now I'm in the outlining portion
[00:35:02.749] of preparing for my screencast.
[00:35:05.118] So I need to get my ideas down on paper.
[00:35:07.556] So one way I can do that is with a mind map.
[00:35:10.194] Now I can come in here to the insert mind map
[00:35:12.275] or I can come up here on this bar
[00:35:14.391] and hit mind map here as well.
[00:35:16.246] And you see I have all these different mind mapping options.
[00:35:19.450] Now, it may not be quite as robust let's say
[00:35:22.244] as specific mind mapping applications
[00:35:24.769] but it has a really good built-in
[00:35:26.902] mind map set up here inside of Curio 11.
[00:35:29.810] So you can see different styles.
[00:35:31.378] I'm just gonna go and use the clean circles.
[00:35:33.572] I'm gonna say insert and so here we go.
[00:35:35.906] I start with my central topic
[00:35:37.612] and let's say I'm gonna say it's a Curio 11
[00:35:40.425] because that's what I'm doing a screencast on.
[00:35:43.130] And if I just hit enter, you notice I get a child on here
[00:35:46.778] and let's just say introduction.
[00:35:49.747] So I've got to do that
[00:35:51.184] let's say I've got to do installation and setup.
[00:35:56.992] And let's say I want to do a interface overview.
[00:36:02.892] And so you get an idea of how this works just by doing this
[00:36:06.010] and just putting this information in there.
[00:36:10.363] And if I ever wanted to go into sub areas off of this
[00:36:15.753] I could do that as well just by clicking this area here
[00:36:18.627] and then it would allow me to tab out.
[00:36:21.936] So if I just hit, select it and hit tab
[00:36:27.038] then it gives me another section here
[00:36:28.632] for a child off of this one.
[00:36:29.981] And I can say adding sections
[00:36:33.186] and just keep going with enter.
[00:36:34.884] You know add folders, and you get the idea.
[00:36:37.357] I can build this nice mind map, and so if I just come here
[00:36:40.396] and just move it over you can see it.
[00:36:42.337] And again and the Inspector, I can change things.
[00:36:44.366] I can change the style if I want
[00:36:46.073] I can change the text, the stroke, the fill
[00:36:48.736] all those different properties of my mind map.
[00:36:51.775] I can also come here to mind map itself
[00:36:54.317] and change the arrangement
[00:36:56.067] for my right, left, up, down, org chart.
[00:36:59.359] And I can change what the lines look like in here as well.
[00:37:02.405] So it does give me a number of options to set that up.
[00:37:05.139] I'm gonna go ahead and just close this
[00:37:06.785] and so you get an idea of what my mind map looks like now
[00:37:09.571] that I've got set and ready to go.
[00:37:11.495] Now what I can do, let me just come in here and delete that.
[00:37:14.047] And let's just say it's a simple mind map like this.
[00:37:16.023] The other things I want to add.
[00:37:17.791] Now if I don't want to look at it just as a mind map.
[00:37:20.168] Let's say I want it to be a list instead.
[00:37:22.667] Well the great thing about Curio
[00:37:23.947] is that it's got a bunch of list formats
[00:37:26.133] and if I just control click on this again
[00:37:28.910] I could convert this mind map into a list.
[00:37:31.348] And so there goes it converted it right into a list for me.
[00:37:34.413] Again, even with the drop-down areas
[00:37:36.268] for the child sections that are below there.
[00:37:38.950] Now I've got my list.
[00:37:40.331] this is going to be the outline let's say
[00:37:42.177] that I'm going to teach from as I'm looking at Curio.
[00:37:45.032] And again, I can come here to the Inspector
[00:37:47.383] and take a look at it as well.
[00:37:49.473] And I'm just gonna pull that back out.
[00:37:52.198] Now if I want to, I can also apply a list style to this
[00:37:55.637] and so I want to change this list style
[00:37:57.466] because since I'm going to be recording
[00:37:59.277] I want to pick a nice list style.
[00:38:01.167] And one of the things I want is a hierarchical to do list
[00:38:04.040] so that I can just check things off as I go.
[00:38:06.365] Again, there are other ones here that you see.
[00:38:08.733] You can create dossiers and whiteboard looking ones
[00:38:11.607] and all just, all kinds of different styles
[00:38:14.250] but I want this hierarchical one.
[00:38:16.126] I'm gonna say choose, and so as you can see
[00:38:18.042] now it's converted that into a checklist of things.
[00:38:20.515] That I can just check these off
[00:38:22.552] once I'm done with each area.
[00:38:24.868] If I pull out the Inspector again here
[00:38:27.742] and I've got my list information
[00:38:30.189] and I can change the format of the list
[00:38:32.113] to however I want here on the side.
[00:38:34.333] And I've got a few other options
[00:38:35.979] to actually go through and format what I'm looking at here
[00:38:39.558] in terms of how I deal with the list.
[00:38:41.169] And I can change the styles in here at anytime as well
[00:38:43.729] and some of those other specifics.
[00:38:45.941] So as you can see, very simply using the mind map software
[00:38:49.424] I can convert it into an outline
[00:38:51.148] that makes it a lot easier for me
[00:38:52.767] to do the screencasting with.
[00:38:54.544] And that's one of the great advantages
[00:38:56.477] of having the list feature.
[00:38:58.593] Now another thing I need to do in preparation
[00:39:00.508] is a script, and so I need to have a script
[00:39:02.763] at least for the starting monologue
[00:39:05.132] let's say of the screencast.
[00:39:06.638] And so in order to do that what I'm gonna do in this case
[00:39:08.885] is show you how to add documents to Curio.
[00:39:12.440] And I'm gonna add a PDF of a script
[00:39:15.363] and so I'm just gonna drag this script in there.
[00:39:17.993] And let's go ahead and minimise this.
[00:39:19.412] And so now I've got this PDF in here that I can resize.
[00:39:23.165] And you notice it shows a nice preview of the PDF
[00:39:27.005] and you'll notice that the bar change
[00:39:28.581] so I can start doing annotations now.
[00:39:30.479] So I can actually annotate this if I want to.
[00:39:32.499] I can highlight it a colour.
[00:39:34.267] You can see now I've got annotations on there.
[00:39:36.757] I can write on it if I want to.
[00:39:39.074] Type some notes to myself, I can copy things.
[00:39:42.365] It's really nice when I'm done.
[00:39:43.941] I can just stop annotating and it'll freeze it for me
[00:39:46.545] and now it's in that format.
[00:39:48.530] Now if I want to, I've got more than one page here.
[00:39:51.316] If I just control click on this PDF here
[00:39:54.416] I can come down to the very bottom
[00:39:56.832] and say single page spread PDF, and I'm gonna say one
[00:40:00.559] because I've got two pages in this PDF
[00:40:02.910] and if I say spread PDF, now you'll notice
[00:40:05.121] that it puts the second page there.
[00:40:07.116] And I can move these however I'd like to move them.
[00:40:09.554] I can even move them side-by-side
[00:40:11.164] if I want to view them more in a book mode
[00:40:13.933] and have them aligned that way.
[00:40:15.440] Let me just scroll out so you can get an idea
[00:40:17.686] of what that looks like on the page.
[00:40:19.280] And so now I can show the PDF pages side-by-side.
[00:40:22.789] So Curio does a nice job of working with your PDFs
[00:40:26.150] inside of your document as well.
[00:40:29.581] And you can, like I said before
[00:40:30.948] you can add pages, files and things like that.
[00:40:33.342] Though you'll have to edit those in the outside application
[00:40:35.972] they do display them using the QuickLook features
[00:40:39.011] that are built into our operating system.
[00:40:41.797] So that gives me the preparation stuff so I'm ready there.
[00:40:45.402] And so now we can go down to the record section
[00:40:48.250] and in here I've got project files that I would add.
[00:40:51.428] And again just like I did before. I'll just show you that.
[00:40:54.214] I'm going to move the, let's just say I'm gonna put
[00:40:56.667] the wallpaper for SCO in there.
[00:40:58.573] So that I've got my wallpaper ready to go
[00:41:00.916] and I don't want to view it that way
[00:41:02.605] so I'm gonna show it as an icon.
[00:41:04.416] And so now I've got it as an icon there
[00:41:06.207] that I can view and take a look at.
[00:41:09.603] And the beauty of that too is if I come to the Inspector
[00:41:12.589] I can change some of the shape stuff
[00:41:14.792] and some of the details of it
[00:41:17.140] and the size and all that kind of deal.
[00:41:19.108] So if I wanted to increase the icon size I could do that.
[00:41:22.095] So you just make a little bit bigger
[00:41:23.993] if I wanted to put it that way.
[00:41:25.969] Okay now that I've got everything set up
[00:41:27.676] for this particular project.
[00:41:28.991] I'm on the delivery area
[00:41:30.671] where I've got my check list of things to do.
[00:41:32.944] And so this is just a standard generic checklist
[00:41:35.591] but I want to show you how this works
[00:41:37.820] in terms of the getting things done system
[00:41:39.813] that's built into Curio.
[00:41:41.458] So if I just for instance, select this first item right here
[00:41:44.846] and if I go into meta, you'll notice as I scroll down
[00:41:48.172] I can have a start date for a project or a due date
[00:41:51.542] and so I'm just gonna go ahead and set a due date
[00:41:53.814] and you'll notice that as soon as I do that
[00:41:55.678] it put a due date flag in front.
[00:41:57.628] And I can select whatever time I want it to be.
[00:42:00.110] I can say it's in one day or whatever
[00:42:02.539] and so now I've got an assignment there.
[00:42:04.176] I can come and do the same thing for this one.
[00:42:06.231] Lets go ahead, well I got to turn this on first
[00:42:08.269] and then we can assign a different day.
[00:42:09.888] We can say plus one day.
[00:42:11.125] So that's gonna be due on the 22nd, and so on.
[00:42:13.929] And so I can just come in here
[00:42:15.444] and actually turn on just different due dates
[00:42:17.899] and in that way it will line that up for me.
[00:42:21.069] And another neat thing about that is
[00:42:23.733] if I come up to the status area
[00:42:25.274] notice I got a little purple item up here.
[00:42:27.704] And this is the status shelf
[00:42:29.306] which comes with the professional version
[00:42:31.883] And if I come down here I can track
[00:42:33.860] my different projects and due dates.
[00:42:35.619] And so you can see I've got something due
[00:42:37.552] tomorrow in the checklist.
[00:42:39.346] I've got something due within a week
[00:42:41.128] I've got something due next month
[00:42:42.336] and then I've got all these future ones
[00:42:43.843] with checklists on them
[00:42:45.314] that come from this list here
[00:42:47.282] as well as some of the other lists I've got in the future.
[00:42:49.947] And so I can use this then, to manage my various projects
[00:42:53.412] right inside of Curio itself.
[00:42:56.313] So now that we've taken a look at how to set up a project
[00:42:59.192] and all of the different things I can do with it.
[00:43:00.995] Let's take a look now at the search features
[00:43:03.202] that are built into Curio 11.
[00:43:05.618] So if I come over here and just click on search
[00:43:08.326] You see I could do searches by different things.
[00:43:10.834] I can search by text, so for instance
[00:43:13.213] if I put the word topic in, since that's there
[00:43:15.747] and I hit enter, you notice it did find the word topic
[00:43:18.830] that's in my deliverables list.
[00:43:20.075] And that's the only place that it shows up.
[00:43:21.808] It shows up in this checklist.
[00:43:23.915] Now I can cancel the search and try something again.
[00:43:27.058] I can put in the word Curio
[00:43:28.669] and let's see if that comes up anywhere.
[00:43:30.385] And yes it did, you can see it came up on my research
[00:43:32.749] in the website, in a web view there and here on my outline
[00:43:36.513] and it shows in all those different areas.
[00:43:38.150] And if I select it, it highlights where it's found.
[00:43:40.658] You can see it's found right there
[00:43:42.182] and it's found inside this document as well.
[00:43:44.115] And so that's another way that I can do it.
[00:43:46.187] And I can group them by start date
[00:43:47.963] and all kinds of different ways
[00:43:49.370] if I want to look at them in a particular order.
[00:43:52.343] So there are some nice search features
[00:43:54.137] that are built into Curio 11.
[00:43:56.775] Now I also have the ability to search over here as well.
[00:44:00.015] If I come to the organiser and hit this
[00:44:01.913] I can search by all kinds of different things.
[00:44:04.481] By date, I can philtre by label or by tag.
[00:44:07.599] And so I can philtre by tag and say.
[00:44:10.925] Which legs or tags do I want to do that?
[00:44:12.959] Let's say February, which again February
[00:44:15.215] this is the only place I put a February date
[00:44:17.409] was within this particular item here.
[00:44:20.796] So again, there's a couple of different ways
[00:44:23.382] that you can search within Curio
[00:44:25.019] but the search features are really nice
[00:44:27.144] and so it it does speed up your ability
[00:44:30.174] to find things inside of the application.
[00:44:33.291] Okay one more thing I wanted to show you
[00:44:35.259] is a built-in research assistant that's called Sleuth.
[00:44:39.012] Now Sleuth is up here, I can just click this to get at it.
[00:44:42.086] And you see it brings up it's own window.
[00:44:44.263] Or if I wanted to, let me just close this.
[00:44:46.788] I can come over here to the Library tab
[00:44:48.434] and Sleuth as a tab within that.
[00:44:50.419] Now what Sleuth does, is allows me to do web searches
[00:44:53.414] right within the Curio application
[00:44:55.626] and targeted web searches.
[00:44:57.350] As you can see I can look at Google images.
[00:44:59.553] I've got photos, I've got all these places to get images.
[00:45:02.322] Multimedia news reference, search engines
[00:45:05.596] I can choose whatever I want in here.
[00:45:07.799] So for instance, I'm just gonna
[00:45:09.046] paste in ScreenCast Online here.
[00:45:10.581] If I hit enter, you can see it went to Google images
[00:45:13.071] and I can just grab an image I want
[00:45:14.673] and drag it right into my project
[00:45:16.684] without having to open a web browser and doing it that way.
[00:45:20.061] So I'm just gonna delete that and get rid of that.
[00:45:22.273] But I wanted to show you that
[00:45:23.684] because it's a really nice built-in feature
[00:45:25.364] that allows you to research
[00:45:26.714] right within the application itself.
[00:45:28.978] Now another thing I want to show you is
[00:45:31.207] how do you get your information out of Curio?
[00:45:33.723] Because that's one of the questions most people would have.
[00:45:36.301] And so in order to share your information
[00:45:38.382] you can either come up here to file and share
[00:45:41.691] or you can go right here to the menu bar and click on share.
[00:45:44.738] Now you'll notice I have the option to share
[00:45:46.828] the entire project or to share just the space
[00:45:49.649] Project workflow that I'm on right now.
[00:45:51.983] So I can choose which one I want to do.
[00:45:53.803] So if I wanted to share the entire project
[00:45:56.207] I can export it as text, RTF, HTML, image or a PDF.
[00:46:01.527] I can also email it as a Curio project
[00:46:04.114] if I want someone else to be able
[00:46:05.133] to open it or a PDF itself.
[00:46:06.961] And then I can also print it if I wanted to
[00:46:09.835] or I can begin a presentation, which which I can't show you
[00:46:12.769] because my screencast software won't allow it
[00:46:15.143] but it would take you into a Keynote presentation
[00:46:18.186] moving through the different project spaces that you've got.
[00:46:22.708] So let's go ahead and show you what an export looks like.
[00:46:25.051] I'm gonna export this as a PDF and so it gives me options
[00:46:29.404] I'm just gonna call this test
[00:46:31.224] and we're gonna go ahead and put it on my desktop.
[00:46:34.072] And I can fit it into a single printing page.
[00:46:36.358] I can have it auto rotate
[00:46:37.978] so that there's not any scaling for these longer pages.
[00:46:40.590] And I can print the background and all that sort of thing
[00:46:43.420] so I'm just gonna leave these at default and just say export
[00:46:46.546] to give you an idea of how this works.
[00:46:48.270] What I'm gonna do is just lower this for a minute.
[00:46:50.425] And here is the actual PDF.
[00:46:52.421] I'm just gonna do a quick preview.
[00:46:54.206] And you can see in the preview
[00:46:55.790] I've got all the different pages
[00:46:57.685] of my particular project here.
[00:46:59.958] All set and ready to go in a PDF
[00:47:01.908] that I can share with somebody else and I can go from there.
[00:47:05.940] So again, depending on how you format it
[00:47:07.711] this could be a really good way of sharing that information
[00:47:14.965] So that's it for this week.
[00:47:16.741] As you can see Curio is a powerful notebook application
[00:47:20.015] that can be used in a variety of ways
[00:47:21.561] to help you with everything from notes
[00:47:23.280] to ideas to project planning
[00:47:24.961] and it includes everything you need in one application.
[00:47:28.470] So that's it for this week's show
[00:47:29.950] we'll speak to you next time.
[00:47:31.805] [Music]
