Many apps are embracing a subscription-based pricing model, which is great for developers but can cause subscription fatigue for consumers. MacPaw (the developers of CleanMyMac and Gemini) have a different idea: a service that provides developers with a predictable income stream while limiting the number of subscriptions that consumers have to pay for each month.

That service is called SetApp, and it has been described as the "Netflix for quality Mac apps."

Parallels Toolbox is a very unusual application. It's a toolbox that is filled with over 20 tools that each do one thing and do it well. While much of its capability can be accomplished via other utilities, Parallels Toolbox contains them all in one simple interface. It replaces the need for complicated Terminal commands or hard-to-remember keystrokes. Whether it's keeping your Mac awake, finding duplicate files, or making animated GIFs, Parallels Toolbox has got it. (It even works on Windows!)

In this episode, Allison Sheridan will walk you through each tool, and show you how to configure them to get the most out of each one.

Tip - macOS - ScreenFloat

Date: 12th September 2017

Duration: 06:31

A very useful utility for the Mac that allows you to take a partial screen capture and have it float on top of all your windows. Great when you want to capture part of your screen for reference purposes and have it available at all times.

You can also create floating panels or Shots, as the app calls them from files and also from your clipboard.

If you have shots you refer to often (as l do) you can build a library of them in the Shots Browser and create manual or smart collections.

Quicken 2017

Date: 8th September 2017

Duration: 59:34

Update: Please be aware the Quicken 2017 is only available for the US and Canada.

Quicken has been around for many years and has become the go-to finance management software for the PC. Quicken's history with Apple products has not been as good however, with many of the features either missing, or not functioning as well as their PC counterpart.

Quicken for Mac has seen some software improvements that brings it a lot closer to the PC version in terms of its feature set.

In this screencast Todd Olthoff takes a look at some of the differences, and covers most of the features available in the 2017 version of Quicken for Mac.

Quicken has some great features for tracking your bank and credit card accounts, as well as the ability to track your investments and loans to help you see your overall financial picture. We also take a look at Quicken for iOS, which allows you to see your financial picture on the go, and syncs with the desktop version.

Ulysses is yet another app to switch from a traditional single payment purchase to a new recurring subscription model.

As with previous apps, this has caused much consternation as many people refuse to adopt a subscription model for software applications.

In this episode, I take a look at Ulysses and the changes to the app, along with a potential way of sticking with Ulysses using SetApp, another subscription-based service, but one that gives you access to over 80 Mac apps in addition to Ulysses.

If you really don't want to go down the subscription route, I also take a look at two alternatives to Ulysses: Byword and iA Writer, two terrific, cross-platform, single-payment apps.

Of course, we can't forget to mention Scrivener when considering powerful writing apps. Since I've already covered Scrivener extensively on other shows, you'll find the link to those in the show notes.

Tip - Picatext

Date: 22nd August 2017

Duration: 04:00

You know the frustration: you go to select some text on your Mac to copy and paste and it isn't selectable!

Picatext is a great little utility that allows you to capture text you never thought could be highlighted. Just select the area on screen that your want to capture and Picatext (using OCR) converts the text into selectable text, it's like magic.

You can extract text from images, too!

Check out this week's tip video to see it in action.

YNAB is a financial software application that has all of the basics needed for tracking and managing your accounts, but it does so using a budgeting interface that helps you track your spending so you are in control of where your money goes.

YNAB includes both a typical register for tracking your individual accounts and daily transactions, as well as a robust budgeting system that can be customized to fit your needs. Where this application differs from other money management programs is that it comes with a method of how to work with your money, and ways to be successful in setting up a budgeting system that is not too rigid and allows you to roll with any changes or challenges that life may throw your way.

YNAB is a web-based application. It lets you view your finances and spending from any computer with a web browser, making it easy to access no matter what device you are using. There is an iPhone and iPad application, and a macOS version is on its way, for those who like having it on their Mac.

In this episode, Todd Olthoff will walk you through the YNAB approach to budgeting, and take you through all the steps to managing your money using the application.
