Plex is a complete solution for local and online media.
If you take the plunge and go down the PlexConnect route, this show demonstrates what you might see on your Apple TV.
In addition, although not based on iOS, I give you a quick demo of what Plex looks like on a Roku3 box, just for the lolz ;-)
Disclaimer: Apple can stop PlexConnect from working at any time, so there are no guarantees that is will work, even on the day this issue is published.

Mmm, with Apple pushing new channels in the background automatically now (they added Vevo et al this way recently didn't they) without a ATV software update, and pulling them too (they pulled the Apple Keynotes channel a month after WWDC 2013, before then re-releasing it again just *after* the 10 Sep 2013 iPhone event recently)...
Hence there's a possibility they could break this without a full software update, so users may not even have the option to NOT update the ATV software.
...But we'll see. ;-)
Nice edition of the show anyway.
