Dropbox article says storing on EXTERNAL DRIVES is not supported at all! How on earth did you get that 5TB's (~2TB's used so far) onto a local external without having such problems then?:www.dropboxforum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/201674729-Running-on-External-Drive www.dropbox.com/en/help/89 Surely this is a MASSIVE problem with using Dropbox (both now and in future), as local external storage is where everyone is basically forced to store our now TB's of data...?? Please explain. :-(

Hi James, To be honest, I never realised that they weren't officially supported! I've never had any problems with Dropbox on my external Thunderbolt Drive. I'm using an OWC Thunderbay and it's been rock solid. There is a "For our Advanced Users" warning at the end of this pagewww.dropbox.com/en/help/89 that indicates to proceed with caution but doesn't say it's not supported. One word of warning though, never, never put Dropbox on a Drobo, even a Thunderbolt connected one.

OK, good to know. I have Thunderbolt v1 (WD My Book 8TB) externals (main+backup) I was potentially gonna use with a Dropbox solution, so I suppose Thunderbolt (and perhaps with more latency, USB too?) must offer these "file update events" polling that perhaps NAS-type connections don't...? Think I'm gonna think about it, and perhaps try and test before attempting. It's a shame Dropbox don't offer much info about it; hey-ho. I never liked the idea of Drobo's proprietary BeyondRaid system, and its juggling data on drive size upgrades (plus reading about the long rebuilt times/failures in doing so – though perhaps they may have improved more recently?), hence skipped the brand. Previously had a Promise Pegasus R6 which was REALLY great but really rather expensive to upgrade, hence sold and going to the WD's. Running out of space (blame video/lossless music!), but planning on waiting until Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C arrives on Apple, then doing a mass upgrade. Ouch, lots of money, lol!
