Adobe Lightroom Update

Date: 13th December 2017

Adobe recently announced some changes to it's Creative Cloud options for Lightroom. With users moving more and more to mobile devices, Adobe decided to go towards a mobile-first solution for Lightroom. In the process, they've separated their desktop and cloud-based products, calling them Lightroom Classic for the desktop version and Lightroom CC for the cloud-based one. This has caused some confusion not only over the names of each of the products but also which one to use in your photography workflow. With that in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to do an update show on Lightroom.

In this screencast, we will look at the differences between the two versions of Lightroom, and go over some of the feature updates and user interface changes in each. We'll also take a look at some ways you can use features from both the desktop and CC versions in your photo workflow, using a real-world example.

iStat Menus 6 from Bjango is a terrific update to an essential Mac utility. This update brings a host of new options on how to display information about the performance of your Mac. New colors, new icons, new graphs; it's all about tailoring to your needs.

In this update show, Allison Sheridan will demonstrate the new features that have been added since her tutorial from July 2015, SCOM0513.

You'll learn about the enhanced options in tracking CPU/GPU performance, memory management, disk speed, network speed, thermal sensors, battery and power, including connected Bluetooth devices, date and time, and an entirely new section providing local weather.

The folks at Bjango have even added notifications to alert you of problems such as a process that has been chewing up too much CPU for too long, a sensor that's reading high temperatures, or if your disk is getting dangerously full.

Allison will also demonstrate a pair of utilities (iStat Server and iStat View) that allows you to monitor the computers (Macs, PCs or Linux boxes) on your network. This can be done from either an iOS device or a Mac.

Ninox Database for macOS & iOS

Ninox is a simple but elegant database application for the Mac & iOS, that provides a number of pre-made database templates, as well as the option to create your own database from scratch.

Ninox allows you to create your own custom databases for storing all kinds of information, and it does it in an easy to use interface. You can create multiple tables to hold different types of information, import and export information to and from your database, and create forms and reports for analyzing, sharing and printing your database information. It also syncs with iCloud, which lets you take your databases with you no matter what device you are using.

There are two versions of Ninox: Personal and Cloud. The Cloud version provides a web version of the application, that can be accessed by multiple users and requires a subscription.

In this episode, Todd Olthoff covers the Personal version of Ninox Database.

Tip - macOS - Preview Tips - Pt 3

Date: 28th March 2017

Duration: 06:06

Following on in the occasional series about the fantastic Preview app on the Mac, this weekly tip video covers some of the "party tricks" built right into Preview, and exposes a surprise in iOS too.

Firstly, I demonstrate how to extract beautiful full sized Application Icons from your installed apps with a few simple keystrokes, and use Preview to resize and export them.

Then I move on to the really smart way of setting up signatures in Preview on the Mac - either using your trackpad, or using your camera to snap your signature to use in your PDF forms.

Unfortunately there is no separate Preview app for iOS, but did you know that you can actually access Preview functionality on your iOS device, even creating and applying signatures? Annotate, create Loupes, add Text - it's all available for free in iOS - even if slightly hidden away.

What's more, any annotations you make to your documents will sync between your Mac and iOS, but even your signature "Library" will sync too.

Watch this week's tip and all will be revealed!

Reminders on the Mac, iPhone & Apple Watch

Reminders is a surprisingly powerful application that comes with macOS, iOS and watchOS. With Reminders, you can bridge the gap between your calendar and a to do list. Reminders can be set for when you arrive or leave a location, they can be set for specific times and dates, they can repeat, and they can even be set to remind you to do something when you get into or out of your car.

Reminders even lets you share lists with other Apple users so you can collaborate on tasks. You can use Siri to set up Reminders on your Mac, but Siri on iOS and the Apple Watch, makes Reminders the best tool for when you're on the run.
