Battery health is critical when dealing with mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad.

With the introduction of iOS 12, Apple now delivers a wealth of information about your battery's health, its charging history and how the applications you use affect your battery consumption.

In this tip video, I take a look at the new charts and lists available to help you keep on top of your battery usage.

HashPhotos for iOS

Date: 26th October 2018

Duration: 60:18

Show ref: SCOM0781

Think of HashPhotos as a way to augment Apple Photos. It works on your existing iCloud Photo Library but brings unique capabilities that simply don't exist in the Photos app.

You don't have to choose between Apple Photos and HashPhotos because they work together, allowing you to have the best of both worlds. Most of the features of HashPhotos act on your iCloud Photos Library, so if you create albums and folders in HashPhotos, they show up there, too. Edits you make to your images also carry over.

HashPhotos is incredibly fast, even on a giant iCloud Photos library, making it more efficient for some things than working in Photos on the Mac. But the real power is in the extra features, like adjusting the dates on photos, adding location data, creating film strips, and much more.

This week, Allison takes you on a tour of HashPhotos and shows you all of those features, using both iPad and iPhone.

Tip - Scanning with Office Lens

Date: 11th September 2018

Duration: 07:51

Show ref: SCOM0768

Apple Notes is great but is sorely missing Optical Character Recognition, or OCR, for scanned documents. This enables you to search for words inside scanned documents. Perhaps we'll see that in a future release.

In the meanwhile, using Office Lens, you can scan documents, whiteboards, and business cards today on your iPhone or iPad and make them fully searchable. Unfortunately, you can't bring the searchable documents into Apple Notes, but if you use an application like Microsoft OneNote, you can search the entire contents of your scanned items - it can even search your handwritten notes.

In this tip, I show you the basics of using Office Lens and OneNote.

Vectornator Pro

Date: 3rd August 2018

Duration: 52:56

Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer are the big names in vector design programs. These are highly capable, but highly complex programs. Affinity Designer for iPad just came out and it's also highly capable but with a steep learning curve. If you want to learn to design with vectors, or you only need to make simple designs, these programs can be overkill.

The free Vectornator Pro for iOS might be just what you need. While an Apple Pencil with an iPad Pro is a fantastic way to create artwork with Vectornator Pro, it also works well on the small screens of the iPhone.

Don't be fooled into thinking Vectornator Pro can't be used for more advanced design. Allison demonstrates Bezier curves, gradients, layers, and more. Vectornator Pro even integrates with Adobe's Creative Cloud and has built-in assets for building artwork for mobile applications. And did we mention that it's free?

Drafts v5 for iOS - Part 1

Date: 1st June 2018

Duration: 64:11

Drafts is where text starts on iOS. It's a powerful application that allows you to quickly capture what's on your mind, then process and send that text just about anywhere on iOS. Version 5 of Drafts was released recently, bringing many new features and a revamp of the user interface.

In this first tutorial, Mike shows you how to get up and running with Drafts 5 by walking you through the interface and demoing several of the built-in actions included with the free version. He also explains how to modify and edit custom Actions (Pro feature), walks you through the different Modes and Settings, and goes over using the Messages and Apple Watch apps.

Show ref: SCOM0734

Following on from a request from a ScreenCastsOnline member, Don went on a quest to find out the best way to extract messages from the Messages app for use in emails or other applications. The best solution he found was PhoneView from Ecamm - but it does so much more!

In this week's tip video, Don takes you through the initial setup of PhoneView and demonstrates how easy it is to create PDFs, Text files, CSV files and more from your messages. You can even extract the media files and play them independently. PhoneView is also a great way to create permanent archives of your messages.

Tip - iCloud.com on iOS

Date: 10th April 2018

Duration: 06:01

Show ref: SCOM0724

This weekly tip video covers a workaround to allow people without Macs (or any computer) to access iCloud.com on an iPad or iPhone.

This is necessary in order to create iCloud-based Mail rules and to access some additional preferences not available on iOS devices.

Tip - iPhone Photo Timer & Apple Watch

Date: 6th March 2018

Duration: 04:05

Show ref: SCOM0714

Despite the best intentions, it can be really hard to hold your iPhone (or iPad) still when taking photos. Invariably, there is some stretching involved in reaching for the on-screen shutter button or volume controls.

In this week's tip I show you how to use the built-in timer to give you a few seconds to frame the shot and hold the iPhone as still as possible.

I also show you a great way to control the camera remotely using your Apple Watch. There's something really cool about seeing your camera display and controlling zoom and exposure, all from your wrist!

iOS 11 brings with it native screen recording to your iPad or iPhone. You can record video only or both video and audio using your iOS device's microphone.

It's a great tool for creating short instructional videos for friends or family.

Once recorded, you can trim your video directly in the iOS Photos app, or use a special iMovie extension for more advanced tasks such as adding titles and music.
