Tutorial Description

In this episode, Allison Sheridan shows you how to use something you already use every day, and that's the Finder in macOS.

You might be a really sophisticated user who has been using the Mac for a long time, or you could be new to the Mac, but either way she's positive she will show you a trick or two when using the Finder.

Allison digs through all of the Finder Preferences first, learning how to customize the Finder Sidebar to configure it to match the way you work, followed by the Finder toolbar, finishing off with a look at the various options in the view menu.

The full tutorial covers:

  • macOS Finder Defaults
  • Finder Preferences - General
  • Finder Preferences - Tags
  • Finder Preferences - Sidebar
  • Finder Preferences - Advanced
  • Finder View Menu
  • Default Toolbar Review
  • Customize Toolbar
  • Adding Items to the Toolbar
  • View Options
  • View Options - List View
  • View Options - Icon View
  • View Options - Column View
  • View Options - Cover Flow
  • Adding Items to the Sidebar
  • Proxy Icon
  • Add the Library to Sidebar

Nice job Allison…THIS IS BY WAY OF HEADS UP REGARDING TOTALFINDER, a Finder enhancement utility.

I have used TotalFinder for years. The program stopped working when Yosemite was released. The developer came out with a new version which he claim is compatible with macOS Sierra which I am currently running. So last week, I installed TotalFinder. After the installation, I discovered everything seemed to work except for the 1Password Safari and Chrome browser extensions.

I contacted the guys at Agilebits, makers of 1Password to see why TotalFinder was not playing nicely with 1Password. They got back to me with the notion that both programs should work together. Since 1Password is one of my must-have apps, I uninstalled TotalFinder and installed new 1Password browser extensions. Everything working fine again.

Agillebits also told me the Safari extension out in the world last week (version 4.6.4) was flawed and their new version (4.6.5) fixes the flaw and this might have been the source of my problem. This doesn't answer why I also had problems with the Chrome extension.

At this point, I suggest users stay away from TotalFinder if you are running macOS Sierra. If you want a Finder supplement, I have found PathFinder works fine running on Sierra.

Thanks for the detailed process you went through, Mike. I guess it's good to see the dev is trying to make it work while playing in the sandbox correctly (see what I did there?)

I really like these 'back to basics' tutorials, Allison has done a good job here. And yes, I thought I already knew all that was worth knowing about the Finder, but Allison came up trumps with the proxy icon thing which I had never seen before.

Yay! The proxy icon is such a hidden treasure. The only problem is I can never remember what it's called!

I enjoyed Alison's presentation very much . I have one problem and maybe Alison could advise me how to handle it.
All my files: I have so many photos which I never placed there, and why are they 2X, 3 x or 4x displayed when I just need one? Do I have to manually delete the photos or how can I organize them? And why are they in Finder in the first place, when I have them in "Photos"? I am looking forward to your suggestion.
Thank you.

Gundula - I'm not 100% sure, because I rarely look at All Files. It's just too overwhelming! I wonder though, they may show up multiple times because of things like thumbnails created by Apple Photos. I wouldn't worry about it, and I definitely wouldn't go mucking about with them from that view!

And thank you so much for the kind words.
