Tutorial Description

Following on from looking at the new Tabs in the Finder last week, this week we take a look at another new feature in the Finder - Tags.

Previously only available via third party applications, OS X Mavericks now has Tags support built right into the Finder. Even better, all the tags you might have created using third party apps using the Open Meta standard should also be available and accessible via the Finder.

In this segment, Todd Olthoff takes a look at why Tags are so useful, demonstrates how they have been implemented in OS X Mavericks and reviews the updated tags support in some of the more popular third party apps.

The full tutorial covers:

  • Benefits of Tagging
  • Tagging Files
  • Tag Preferences
  • Search by Tags
  • Integration with Third Party Applications

Another great show from which I learned some things, but not the one thing I was particularly looking for on tags – so I went and experimented myself.

One of the most powerful features for any tagging system is the ability to combine tags in a search. I've figured out how to quickly do some combined searches which I have briefly documented here: http://zkarj.clarify-it.com/d/4lqgrl

Great show!
One comment on labels: they do not work on files in an open encrypted disk image.
Bug in Mvericks?

Thanks for the comment Peter! I actually have tags working in an open encrypted disk image. Are you not able to assign tags to those items either?

Thanks for the video. Great overview of tags.

My main interest is creating a tagging system. Do you have any resources, posts, etc. on that topic?

Thanks for the comment and kind remarks Arlen. I'm glad the tutorial was helpful! As far as resources on tagging systems, I don't have any published personally at this point but I know that Brett Terpstra has several article on tagging on his site and is writing a book about it. Here is a link to a search on his site for tagging: http://brettterpstra.com/archives/?q=tagging
