Day One is a journaling application for Mac & iOS that is well designed and a complete joy to use. It makes journaling nearly frictionless, which is important if you want journaling to become a consistent habit. In this episode, we cover the ins and outs of Day One and show you several practical examples of how you can put Day One to work for you.

OneNote is a note-taking application from Microsoft that can be used on Mac and iOS. You can type, write or draw with the free form feel of pen to paper. OneNote allows you to search and add clips from the web to better illustrate your ideas. Tags can be used to sort and order your notes so you can easily find them later. Collaborate with anyone, stay on the same page and in sync wherever you are!

OneNote is also adept at handwritten notes on iOS, allows you to highlight what's important and express ideas with colors or shapes. It's easy to pull up your content from anywhere, even if you're offline. You can start on your laptop then update notes directly on iPad.

In Part 2, we move on to cover more advanced features in OneNote on Mac and IOS. We look at inserting audio and video, clipping information from the web, as well as sharing notebooks for collaboration.

Ulysses is yet another app to switch from a traditional single payment purchase to a new recurring subscription model.

As with previous apps, this has caused much consternation as many people refuse to adopt a subscription model for software applications.

In this episode, I take a look at Ulysses and the changes to the app, along with a potential way of sticking with Ulysses using SetApp, another subscription-based service, but one that gives you access to over 80 Mac apps in addition to Ulysses.

If you really don't want to go down the subscription route, I also take a look at two alternatives to Ulysses: Byword and iA Writer, two terrific, cross-platform, single-payment apps.

Of course, we can't forget to mention Scrivener when considering powerful writing apps. Since I've already covered Scrivener extensively on other shows, you'll find the link to those in the show notes.

Tip - Stickies on the Mac

Sometimes you really just want to slap a Post-it sticky note on your desktop. Reminders, to-do lists, notes, keyboard shortcuts - anything you want to be reminded about visually.

Well don't clutter up your monitor with bits of paper, clutter up your Desktop with Sticky Notes!

Stickies is a free app supplied with macOS which can be very useful. Create multi-coloured sticky notes containing formatted text or images, and position them where you want. Arrange them, colour-code them and they'll open in the same position each time you open Stickies.

Notability is a fantastic note taking app for the iPad, iPhone and now the Mac.

It has excellent stylus support for hand-written notes and typed notes, including a unique "Zoom" feature. You can sketch drawings and annotations, type notes, and even audio record lectures and other events that stay timed with your notes.

Editing your hand-written notes is easy because they're all vectors. This means with the swipe of an eraser, you can erase large or small sections of words or sketches, and moving or changing colour and line thickness is a snap.

An iPad Pro with Apple Pencil is not required, but it makes Notability even more natural and useful.

And now with a new Mac App and iCloud syncing, you can now access all of your notes across all of your devices.
