RapidWeaver 8 Foundation - Part 2

Date: 30th November 2018

Duration: 43:00

Show ref: SCOM0791

In Part 1 of our Foundations series on RapidWeaver 8 we covered the basics of setting up your own personal website. You learned everything you needed to know to build a website, do some basic customization, and then publish to the internet. For a lot of people, this is all they need to get a great website up and running using RapidWeaver.

In Part 2, Todd digs a little deeper into some of the settings in RapidWeaver 8 and explore more advanced topics. This includes designing snippets of code and text that can be used across your site using drag and drop, using Add-ons such as Stacks to customise your website, and optimizing it so search engines on the web can find it more easily.

Have you ever wanted to create your own website but the thought of learning HTML and CSS scared you away? Thankfully, you don't have to know how to write HTML or any other web language to use RapidWeaver 8!

RapidWeaver is an all-in-one website design and publishing application that has everything you need to create and publish a website. It has a simple to understand interface that allows you to customize your website in a "what you see is what you get" way - while the coding happens behind the scenes. We have covered RapidWeaver in the past but with the new RapidWeaver 8 combined with our new Foundations series, we thought it was worth covering this great application from start to finish.

iStat Menus 6 from Bjango is a terrific update to an essential Mac utility. This update brings a host of new options on how to display information about the performance of your Mac. New colors, new icons, new graphs; it's all about tailoring to your needs.

In this update show, Allison Sheridan will demonstrate the new features that have been added since her tutorial from July 2015, SCOM0513.

You'll learn about the enhanced options in tracking CPU/GPU performance, memory management, disk speed, network speed, thermal sensors, battery and power, including connected Bluetooth devices, date and time, and an entirely new section providing local weather.

The folks at Bjango have even added notifications to alert you of problems such as a process that has been chewing up too much CPU for too long, a sensor that's reading high temperatures, or if your disk is getting dangerously full.

Allison will also demonstrate a pair of utilities (iStat Server and iStat View) that allows you to monitor the computers (Macs, PCs or Linux boxes) on your network. This can be done from either an iOS device or a Mac.

SetApp - Productivity Apps

Date: 13th October 2017

Many apps are embracing a subscription-based pricing model, which is great for developers but can cause subscription fatigue for consumers. MacPaw (the developers of CleanMyMac and Gemini) have a different idea: a service that provides developers with a predictable income stream while limiting the number of subscriptions that consumers have to pay for each month.

That service is called SetApp, and it has been described as the "Netflix for quality Mac apps."

Tip Video - Following on from our recent tutorials on Bear & Ulysses, I take a look at previewing Markdown formatted files with Marked 2.

One of the problems of keeping on top of the latest developments in Mac and iOS is the sheer number of updates to apps over time. These can range from minor to major updates, and are designed to fix issues or introduce brand new functionality. So for this week, I’m going to take a look at a number apps that I’ve previously covered on ScreenCastsOnline, and bring you up to speed with the latest updates.

The three apps are Hazel, Ulysses & Garageband Live Loops

Ulysses is a fantastic plain text editor for the Mac, iPad and iPhone. It allows you to create plain text documents or “sheets” and use markdown formatting to control the final look and format of your writing. PDF, ePub, HTML, Text, DOCX and even publishing to Medium are all included in this great app, giving you ultimate control of your writing.

As well as a wealth of formatting and exporting capabilities, Ulysses takes away the pain of managing your documents across all your devices. All your sheets are contained in a single Ulysses library, that syncs amazingly well with iCloud. It will even allow you to edit external files from a multitude of sources.

Please note that Ulysses has moved to a subscription service as of August 2017

Two desktop utilities in this week's show:

TotalSpaces2 - Spaces are a way of organising your desktop and has been in OSX for many years. However, you may have given up on standard Spaces in Mavericks due to it's limitations and inflexibility. TotalSpaces2 could be said to be what Spaces should have been originally. TotalSpaces2 gives you back full control of managing your virtual desktops, with many useful configuration options. TotalSpaces2 finally makes desktop spaces usable!

Screens - A neat solution to control and access your Mac desktops locally or remotely using both Macs and iOS devices. With a fully featured Mac client, Screens allows you to setup remote access via its elegant UI and includes a number of easily configurable options such as Quick Connect and custom keyboard shortcuts. Install ScreensConnect and use iCloud to sync your settings and also access your Macs remotely via the separately available Screens for iOS application.
