Following on from a look at setting up restrictions on iOS in last week's tip video, we turn our attention to the Mac. In a similar fashion, it's possible to setup restrictions on the Mac using Parental Controls inside System Preferences.

Parental Controls allow you to restrict access to apps, web browsing and much more. You can even set time periods as well as time limits of allowed usage.

iPads and iPhones are extremely popular with children, but as adults, we have a responsibility to protect them from accessing harmful or inappropriate material.

Apple acknowledges this fact, and provides a wide range of ways to tailor the iOS experience for children of all ages.

iOS 11 contains "Restrictions" that allow you as a parent or caregiver to enable or disable access to apps, services and content on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, as well as access to certain physical parts of the device such as the Camera.

In this weekly tip video, we explore the wide range of restrictions available to you.

Space is always a premium on your Mac, and keeping it uncluttered can give you a performance boost. Gemini 2 from MacPaw makes de-duplicating your Mac a breeze. It won the Prestigious International Design Award - the Red Dot.

Available from the App Store or via your Setapp subscription, Gemini finds identical files and even similar files on your Mac, allowing for automatic removal. It also gives you the option to manually select duplicates or similar files for deletion. Not sure if you want to delete immediately? Setup Gemini to move your duplicate files to a temporary folder before deletion - just in case.

Tip - Gladys

Drag & Drop is great on iOS 11, but sometimes it can be difficult to drag to an application that's not immediately available. If you're dextrous, it's doable, but more often than not it can be quite troublesome.

Wouldn't it be great to just drag content to a storage area that you can access easily later on?

That's where Gladys comes in!

Gladys is a "shelf" app for all your dragged content. Just drag to Gladys and worry about where to use it later. Build a persistent library of content that you can search or filter, then just drag it out of Gladys when you're working in another application and need that content.

Gladys syncs using iCloud, so you can access your library across all of your iOS devices. It's a very useful and polished utility for iOS.

Most people know that the keys to enhanced productivity are the mastery of keyboard shortcuts and a good muscle memory!

But what if your most-used command doesn't have a keyboard shortcut?

Well, the good news is that macOS allows you to add your own keyboard shortcuts, either within a specific application, or for all applications on your Mac.

This tip video walks you through the process of setting up custom keyboard shortcuts.

Printopia is an app that automatically converts any printer connected to your Mac into an AirPrint-compatible printer. Extremely easy to set up, it requires no additional software to be installed on your iOS devices. Your printer simply appears as a network printer to all your iOS devices.

Tip - Moving Your iPhone Activity and Health Data

Date: 14th November 2017

One of the problems of moving to a new iPhone is that the restore process brings everything across. As well as the important information, you also end up with a tonne of applications that you never use and just can't be bothered to weed out.

Wouldn't it be nice to start off with a fresh build of iOS and just the stock apps? You can do this of course (instead of restoring your iPhone) but you'll loose all your Activity, Health and Watch data.

In this tip video, I demonstrate how you can do a partial restore to a new or existing iPhone to remove all the detritus, yet keep all your Activity, Health and Watch data. A third-party utility is used to achieve this (do so at your own risk) and there is no guarantee that it will work with future releases of iOS. However, I used it on my iPhone X and it worked amazingly well! The developers have stated that it is supported on iOS 11.2 beta so it looks promising!

Decipher Activity Transfer is free, but there is a paid version that allows you to transfer additional components in addition to your Activity and Watch data.
