With macOS Mojave, we now have a brand new Mac App Store.

Apple have completely redesigned the Mac App Store to bring it more in line with the iOS App Store, and to turn it into a destination service.

With a beautiful new graphical design, Mac apps are now re-organised into new categories and populated with videos and screenshots. As well as curated lists of apps, we now also have editorial content with behind the scenes articles and developer insights. This makes the Mac App Store a pleasure to visit and explore.

In this tip video, Don takes a look at the new features built into the new Mac App Store.

Tip - Scanning with Office Lens

Date: 11th September 2018

Duration: 07:51

Show ref: SCOM0768

Apple Notes is great but is sorely missing Optical Character Recognition, or OCR, for scanned documents. This enables you to search for words inside scanned documents. Perhaps we'll see that in a future release.

In the meanwhile, using Office Lens, you can scan documents, whiteboards, and business cards today on your iPhone or iPad and make them fully searchable. Unfortunately, you can't bring the searchable documents into Apple Notes, but if you use an application like Microsoft OneNote, you can search the entire contents of your scanned items - it can even search your handwritten notes.

In this tip, I show you the basics of using Office Lens and OneNote.

Taking screenshots on iOS devices is a snap in iOS 11. There are also some handy annotation features to mark up your screenshots and share them with people. You can also discard screenshots easily if you don't want to keep them indefinitely.

If you do wish to save them, the Photos app stores them in a special Screenshots album for easy retrieval. You can even take screenshots from Apple Watch and they sync automatically to your iPhone and iPad via the iCloud Photo Library, and can also be marked up or shared via the Photos app.

I cover all this and more in this week's tip.

Tip - Live Photos Effects

Live Photos are a great addition to the iPhone and you can further transform them using one of three effects: Loop, Bounce and Long Exposure.

I love using the Long Exposure effect on any running water or fountains. It makes a huge difference on your photos, without the need for specialist photo equipment or in-depth technical knowledge.

However, when out and about recently, I had a brain freeze and couldn't remember how to access the Live Photo effects - not everything in iOS is as discoverable as it should be. So I thought it would be a great topic for a refresher tip video!

Show ref: SCOM0748

Two quick updates in this week's tip show:

Text Expansion

Back in episode 0738, we covered using the built-in features of Text Auto-correction in both macOS and iOS. This is an easy way to use abbreviations to expand to simple words and phrases. However, text expansion is not just limited to simple words and phrases. It can also be used for multiple paragraphs, making Text Auto-correction so much more useful! In this tip, Don shows you how to create a multiline text snippet that will sync across your devices.

Subtitles or Captions in Safari

One of the main support issues we come across are people being unable to switch off subtitles when viewing tutorials on the ScreenCastsOnline website or, even worse, seeing two sets of subtitles displayed at once. This is easily fixed and is due to Safari itself displaying subtitles. In this segment, Don shows you how to easily switch both sets of subtitles off, giving you an uninterrupted view of your tutorials.

Tip - Audio in iWork

In this tip video, Don shows you the common method for creating and editing these clips.

In addition, he also demonstrates how these clips are presented and can be replaced or updated in the macOS versions of the apps. You can also include audio in those, but it's necessary to record your audio externally - at least for now!

We've covered many applications for enhancing your digital images before, but never one quite so simple yet effective.

Photolemur uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse your photos and apply selective enhancements to make them pop. No need for a multitude of tweaks to different settings; Photolemur applies them automatically. All you can do is adjust the level of enhancement and that's the beauty of this simple app. It works in either standalone mode for single of multiple photos, or it can be used as a plugin for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, as well as an Apple Photos extension.

In this week's tip video, Don takes you through the different ways Photolemur can be used and shows off some of its stunning results.
